DESCRIPTION:NewtonSERVES announces Project Registration is Now Open for Day of Community Service on Sunday\, April 26\, 2015 \n  \nVolunteer projects are welcome from Newton non-profits\, Newton city departments and schools\, individuals\, and groups of citizens interested in accomplishing specific tasks with the help of over 1\,000 volunteers from the community. Projects can easily be registered online\, by visiting www.newtoncommunitypride.org/NewtonSERVES-project.php. \n  \nProjects can be in the morning\, afternoon or all-day on Sunday\, April 26th or they can be set up individually on an alternate date during the City of Newton’s Volunteer Week\, April 27th-May 2th. In addition to gaining access to volunteers to tackle specific tasks\, project sites may be eligible to receive additional resources such as mulch\, garbage and yard waste bags. Project sites also benefit from raised awareness within the community and all participants receive NewtonSERVES T-shirts and refreshments in honor of their volunteer service. DESCRIPTION:Improving Academic Effectiveness  – April 9\, 6:00-7:30 pm\, Newton Free Library \nEngaging Minds Learning Center (a local learning and tutoring center) has been instrumental in providing tools for students in order to help them learn effectively.  The basis of this program is to teach the idea of “executive function” and the skills which it embraces.   Executive functions are the essential self-regulating skills that we all use every day. They help us plan\, organize\, make decisions\, shift between situations or thoughts\, control our emotions and impulsivity\, and learn from past mistakes. \nThis program is FREE and includes: an explanation of the term “executive function” and why these skills are important in school and in other aspects of education in today’s fast paced world\, tips and strategies geared towards parents and teachers in order to help strengthen students’ skills\, real life applications and take home toolkits to maintain effective learning. \nFree\, drop-in\, no registration required. These nights are a time for our students to get their hands on the latest technology\, hear from local innovators and get excited about all that STEM has to offer. Each evening will be a partnership with a local business in the STEM field and will involve a speaking program as well as an interactive workshop for young people. \nIn partnership with the Newton Public Schools\, we are committed to reaching out to our most vulnerable populations including young women\, minorities and low-income children and families in an effort to help bridge the achievement gap. By partnering with STEM industry businesses\, the “Mayor’s STEM Nights” will provide students with an exciting\, hands-on experience that will demonstrate the practical application of STEM beyond the classroom and help to generate interest in the many opportunities STEM offers.  Local innovators will also share their own stories about how they became interested in the STEM disciplines\, what led them to their current career paths and answer students’ questions. \ns
