Notes from Mrs. U…

The Halloween Dance was a huge success! A BIG thank you to Kara Brodsky, Karen Hite, Amy Pollock Howard, and Carol Pelon for all their time and help in planning the event. Thank you to ALL the families for the Bake Sale treats! We had more than ever and had enough to sell the following Tuesday at the pizza sale! Thank you to all the teachers for their terrific “treats” and all the families who overflowed the buckets for the raffle.

New Kindergarten Assessment: During the month of September, all Kindergarten teachers participated in training to learn how to use a new formative assessment tool called Teaching Strategies GOLD. Newton, like many districts across the state, is part of an initiative called the Massachusetts Kindergarten Entry Assessment (MKEA).  This is a collaboration of the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) and the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), and is part of the federal Race to the Top/Early Learning Challenge Grant.

PTO Bulletin

PTO Minutes: PTO Meeting in the L‐E Music Room, Tuesday, October 14, 2014

The second PTO meeting of the year was held on Tuesday, October 14th. Principal Marcia Uretsky began with a series of school and building updates and the PTO went on to discuss Open Positions on the PTO (posted on our Support page) and Upcoming Events

Building updates:

The School Site Council met recently to review a series of projects being completed at our school. The Jackson Road entrance ceiling panels have been replaced, and the repairs to our front steps will be completed soon.

•First grade teacher, Kristina Anderson, has left for her maternity leave, and will be out of the classroom until April. Maureen Malavase will be taking over her class, and has been working with students since September to make this transition easier for all involved.

Kindergarten teacher, Jessie Gigliotti, will be leaving for her maternity leave in November. An internal substitute will take over her class during this period, and has already begun to work with the students in this class.

Lincoln‐Eliot was awarded a $300 Yellow School Bus grant to pay for the recent 4th grade trip to the Lowell Mills Museum. Ms. Uretsky has also submitted paperwork for a $2,600 grant through the Massachusetts Cultural Association to help fund our Potato Hill Poetry series for 2nd, 4th and 5th grade classes.

The Site council is requesting a Lowes grant to purchase “Learning Walls” for the hallways and cafeterias. This white board paneling will allow teachers and students to share their ideas with other members of the school community.

School Updates

If parents or other L‐E community members know of any grants for which our school may be eligible, please contact Ms. Uretsky at Marcia_Urtesky@newtonk12.ma.us. •

The next Creative Arts and Sciences (CASC) program will be the “Journey into Jazz” performances for grades K–‐2 and grades 3–‐5 on October 22, 2014. In this presentation, singer Semenya McCord and her trio will introduce students to the origins of jazz and its many evolutions.

L‐E students have enjoyed a variety of programs, presentations and field trips over the past month. These include the Tree Guy visit for grade 3, the Lowell Mills field trip for grade 4, the Honey Pot Orchard Apple Picking trip for grade K, the Fire Prevention Unit for grade K and the Arnold Arboretum field trip for grade 3.

November 13th is our annual Flu Shot clinic. Please visit the Nurse’s Office for a form to sign your child up for the vaccine, which will be administered at school during the school day.

Ms. Uretsky and the staff have planned a series of 4 in–‐school assemblies for all grades to promote the school’s core values, excellence and life–‐long learning. These assemblies will highlight the Growth Mindset initiative adopted by all Newton schools, and will share student achievements. The first assembly will take place on October 27th in the Gym.
