Principal Update 9.24.18

Dear Families,

The home of one of our second grade students was recently destroyed in a fire. Sadly, the family lost a majority of their belongings. Our student is in need of some winter clothing now that the weather will be getting cooler. If you have any gently worn boys clothing size 8 that you would like to donate, it would be greatly appreciated. Donations can be delivered to the main office. Thank you!

This week we welcomed Professor Eric Olson (the “Canopy Guy”) to present to our 3rd graders about trees and the ecology of the New England and Costa Rican treetops. The program was organized by the Creative Arts and Sciences committee and funded by your support of the PTO. We also had our first PTO meeting in the library on Monday evening, and it was great to see so many in attendance!

Please mark the following dates on your calendars:

  • Thursday, September 27th: Early Release Day – 12:30 dismissal time
  • Thursday, September 27th: Curriculum Night from 6:00pm – 7:00pm; Title 1 staff will be available to discuss Title 1 services.
  • Friday, September 28th: Picture Day
  • Thursday, October 11th: Flu Clinic at school

Open House/Curriculum Night:

Our Curriculum Night open house will be taking place on Thursday, September 27th from 6:00pm – 7:00pm. Grades K-2 teachers will be presenting for families from 6:00-6:20; grades 3-5 teachers will present for families from 6:25-6:45. Specialists will be located in the Library and the PTO and SEPAC will have a table by the Jackson Road entrance — please stop by and say hello.

Please note childcare will not be provided and families are responsible for their students while onsite. An adult family member should accompany students at all times.

Late arrival

If your child arrives after 8:30am, please drop them off at the Pearl Street entrance. Also, please remind them to stop by the main office before heading to class.

Dogs

Dogs are not allowed on school property but we have come up with a plan that should work for all. If you choose to walk your dog to school at arrival and dismissal times, you and your dog must wait by the Flagpole on the corner of Pearl St and Jackson Rd. Make sure to inform your child’s teacher that you give permission for your child to walk to the Flagpole area on his/her own. It is imperative that you talk with your child to create a plan in case you are late. Make sure to communicate that plan to your child’s teacher.

Please see the message below from Nurse Kristen:

Get the flu vaccine at school, not the flu!

Seasonal flu vaccination clinics will be held during the school day at the Newton Public Schools beginning in late September. Students in Kindergarten through grade 12 may receive vaccine.

The Lincoln Eliot Elementary clinic will be on October 11, 2018. Each student to be vaccinated must have a parent/guardian complete two forms:

  1. Consent/Screening form
  2. Vaccine administration record/Insurance form.

Forms are available in the school nurse’s office, or may be downloaded at www.newtonma.gov/flu. You may electronically complete the form, print, sign and return. Forms are due to the School Nurse October 5, 2018.

Only the flu shot (no nasal spray) will be offered at school this year. The Vaccine Information Statement about the flu shot, and additional information for families including tips on preparing kids for a shot is available at www.newtonma.gov/flu or in the school nurse’s office. There is no cost to receive the vaccine, but insurance information is requested. All students, regardless of insurance status, are invited to receive vaccine with parent permission.

Students are not required to receive flu vaccine, however the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends flu vaccine for all people age 6 months and up. There are many places to get a flu vaccine including at school, your primary health care provider or community clinics. For additional clinic dates for the whole family, visit www.newtonma.gov/flu.

In addition to vaccination, it is important to practice good hand hygiene and cough etiquette by washing hands often; covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or the arm; and staying home when sick.

For more flu prevention tips, talk to the school nurse or check out these websites: www.newtonma.gov/flu and www.cdc.gov/flu

  • The fire lane in the staff parking lot is a no parking zone
  • Dogs:

Dogs are not allowed on school property but we have come up with a plan that should work for all. If you choose to walk your dog to school at arrival and dismissal times, you and your dog must wait by the Flagpole on the corner of Pearl St and Jackson Rd. Make sure to inform your child’s teacher that you give permission for your child to walk to the Flagpole area on his/her own. It is imperative that you talk with your child to create a plan in case you are late. Make sure to communicate that plan to your child’s teacher.

  • In an effort to ensure student safety, we are asking for parents and teachers to remind students NOT to climb through the bushes in the front of the school when entering or exiting the building. Thank you for your assistance with this matter.
  • Please notify the office if you have a change of address or phone number. It is important to have up to date contact information in the case of an emergency.

  • Families Organizing for Racial Justice

FORJ (Families Organizing for Racial Justice) is a coalition of school-aged families in Newton coming together to teach our children – and ourselves – how to stand up for racial equality. For resources & age appropriate book recommendations: https://forjnewton.com/about/

Each school in the district has a team of parents organizing FORJ and the Lincoln-Eliot team is looking for more parents who are interested in enhancing our diverse community through this race, culture, and identity work. Stay tuned for info on a L-E community-building event this spring! L-E FORJ Contact: parent Lanni Isenberg, lanni_harris@yahoo.com

  • Kindergarten Registration
  • If you have a younger child that is 5 (by August 31) or know a friend in the neighbor with a child that age, it’s time to think about Kindergarten! Kindergarten information night is at Newton South on Monday, February 5th at 7:00pm. At the information night, you will receive a folder with all registration documents. You will need to bring the completed paperwork to the Kindergarten screening. Lincoln-Eliot’s screening date is Tuesday, February 27th. Please call the school to schedule your screening appointment. If you have any questions, please call Jena Rossi at 617-559-9540.
  • Winter

Ready or not- winter is here!! Please be sure to send your scholar to school each day with a winter jacket, hats, gloves and snow boots as we will continue have outdoor recess daily throughout the winter. Also, please clearly label these items with your child’s name so they do not get lost or missed placed.

  • Box Tops

Please keep an eye out for any products at home with Box Tops! We collect them in the office and they are redeemed for money for the school. We already have $70 towards our next submission, so keep the collection sheets coming!

  • Arrival and Dismissal:
  • Arrival and dismissal time has become a bit chaotic and dangerous at times. As a result, I am asking you to please adhere to the following to ensure the safety of all scholars:
  • Students should only be let out of the car on the curbside of the street never into the street.
  • The blue zone (on both Pearl Street and Jackson Road) is a no parking zone; it should be used for quick drop off and pick up only
  • If coming from the Capital Street area, please cross students at the Pearl/Jackson light in the designated crosswalk; not in front of cars on Jackson Street.
  • The fire lane in the staff parking lot is a no parking zone
