Farewell Notes for Retiring Bigelow Principal Todd Harrison

The beloved principal of Bigelow Middle School, Todd Harrison, is retiring after this year, and the Bigelow PTO is hoping to put together a letter full of memories honoring him and his leadership.

For Lincoln-Eliot families who have had children in Bigelow with Principal Harrison, they are asking for any special memories you and your kids can include.  It could be drawings, comic strips, a picture of your child, or just a simple line wishing him the best in his new chapter of retirement.

You may upload a file to the shared folder included here:  Todd Harrison- Memories

Please be sure to label it with your first name, last name and year with Mr Harrison.  There is a quick turn-around time as we would like to deliver it at Graduation on Monday, June 21, so please make sure to add anything you would like to by this Friday, June 18.

Thanks very much for your help!

LINCOLN-ELIOT FORJ KIDS BOOK CLUB RECAP
The L-E FORJ Kids Book Club read a selection from A Place at the Table by Saadia Faruqi and Laura Shovan.  We shared our favorite book characters, discussed family tradition, culture, food, differences, personality, motivation and racism.  We hope to read a book or two this summer, too, so contact L-E FORJ Coordinator Lanni Isenberg if you’d like to hear more: Lanni_harris@yahoo.com

June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month
June is recognized as LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Queer) Pride month. Pride month was established in 1999 to lift the voices and ultimately, increase the rights of the LGBTQ community.  People fighting for human rights, civil rights, and legal rights sometimes have to remind supporters to think inclusively.  Political strategist and U.S. civil rights activist Bayard Rustin believed strongly in social justice and achieving goals through nonviolence.  He was gay and he did not hide it at a time when people were arrested for being gay.  Rustin served as an adviser to Martin Luther King, Jr. and is credited for introducing MLK to nonviolent strategy and was the main organizer of the 1963 March on Washington.  In 1969, Rustin wrote:

“If we desire a society of peace, then we cannot achieve such a society through violence. If we desire a society without discrimination, then we must not discriminate against anyone in the process of building this society. If we desire a society that is democratic, then democracy must become a means as well as an end.”

June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month
June is also recognized as LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Queer) Pride month.  While Pride month was not established until the Clinton Administration in 1999, Author/Poet/Activist Audre Lorde (1934-1992) many years before then offered words about celebrating and recognizing voices in our communities:

“Without community, there is no liberation…but community must not mean a shedding of our differences, nor the pathetic pretense that these differences do not exist.” – Audre Lorde

Principal / PTO Update 5.30.21

Dear families,

We had a wonderful celebration around our own Lincoln-Eliot Wishtree this past Friday, where our scholars got to hang their own wishes, inspired by our One Book, One Community read, Wishtree, by Katherine Applegate.  It has been so great to hear the kids talking about this book, and we want to thank Ms. Conley again for organizing this fantastic project to bring our community together!

We are rescheduling the 3rd and 4th grade playdates that were rained out this weekend.  If the weather is better, 3rd graders please join us on the playground Monday, May 31 (tomorrow), at 4pm and 4th graders are invited on Thursday, June 3, at 4pm.

More playground playdates are coming up, in the hopes of connecting our DLA and in-person students before the end of the school year — we hope you can join your classmates for some warm-weather fun!  (Note: these playdates are for your current grade.)

The playdates planned for this week are:

Monday, May 31, 4-5pm:  3rd grade (rescheduled from Sunday)
Tuesday, June 1st, 5-6pm:
5th grade
Thursday, June 3rd, 4-5pm:  4th grade (rescheduled from Saturday)
Saturday, June 5th, 4-5pm:  Kindergarten
Sunday, June 6th, 4-5pm:  2nd grade

We wish you all a peaceful and restful long weekend; see you Tuesday!

Lincoln-Eliot Online Auction!

We’re closing out the year with one last fundraiser: a Lincoln-Eliot Online Auction!  The bidding opens TOMORROW, May 31, and stays open through June 11.  Last year’s auction — normally one of our biggest fundraisers — had to be cancelled, so we’re hoping this year’s will help us raise some money for next year, to support creative arts and sciences enrichment programming, vital classroom technology investments, field trip transportation funds, and much more!

Click here to visit our auction website!

Bid on hand-painted scarves, picnic baskets, family fun baskets, and lots of other great items!

Clothing Drive: Thank You and Volunteers Needed!

Thank you so much to everyone who donated bags of clothing to our FUNDrive!  We now have 264 bags, which is amazing and surpasses our goal — every little donation added up to one big difference!

We will be loading all these bags to transport them to Savers next Saturday, June 5, at 9:45am and would love a couple of volunteers to help move the bags onto the truck!  It will only take at most half an hour of your time and will go much faster with a few helpers.  Please reach out to Ronda Morra at 781-589-7226 or rbmorra@gmail.com to volunteer, and thank you again!
