June 2020 PTO Meeting Recap

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us for our PTO meeting via Zoom on Tuesday, June 9th.  Special thanks to Principal Morrissey, John Mulligan for the Health and Safety Committee update on the building, Lanni Isenberg for the FORJ update, and to all the teachers who attended as well.

The PTO board also wants to thank all the families and LE faculty for being part of the PTO and supporting the school and our kids in all the many ways you do!  We know it’s been a strange year, but we’re so grateful for this wonderful community, and we look forward to the time when we can all be together in person again.

If you missed the PTO meeting, you can review the minutes and slides at these links:

Lincoln-Eliot Parents/Guardians Listening/Sharing Circle on Recent Events – June 16

TUESDAY, JUNE 16th from 4PM – 5PM

Join fellow L-E parents/guardians, FORJ, and Principal Morrissey, for a meaningful hour of learning, listening, and connecting facilitated by the L-E Courageous Conversations About Race Team.  This is an opportunity for us to come together as a Lincoln-Eliot community to discuss the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and the Black Lives Matter movement.

During this hour we will check in with one another, and think about ways in which we can continue to engage in these conversations even after our meeting has ended.

Health and Safety Committee Update

The Lincoln-Eliot Health and Safety Committee has received the results of sample testing conducted by the Newton Teachers Association (NTA). The committee consists of Principal Morrissey, Ariana Foster, Lynn Penczar, Parent Representative John Mulligan and David Stickney, NPS Director of Facilities. The focus of the group has been to advocate for resolution to building and maintenance issues which may affect staff and students’ well-being. Several issues have persisted over the last year. First, some unit ventilators, the heaters installed in most of the classrooms, had blown small particles of unknown composition into several of the rooms. Second, roof leaks had damaged some ceiling tiles and there was a concern that wet material would cause mold growth.

The committee hoped that the district would explore these issues and provide answers as to whether there was mold growth, and to the source and composition of the particulate. The district tried to remedy the situation in several ways, but the problems continued. In January, the NTA had an independent specialist, Michael Sireci, take some particle samples at Lincoln-Eliot. The samples were analyzed by an independent lab. Mr. Sireci produced a report explaining the results.

In short, the particulate expelled from the unit ventilators appears to be a combination of minerals and organic matter typical of the outside environment, materials that likely come from wear on the ventilators (rubber from hoses, insulation, etc.) and building materials from the wall structure where installation may have left openings around ductwork and pipes. Four rooms were sampled for mold growth and the results ranged from one with none to light growth in two rooms and moderate growth in one of two samples in the fourth room. Mold is a sensitive issue and the results are somewhat open to interpretation. There is no standard by which mold growth is defined as either harmful or harmless because individual immune systems differ widely.

The committee met via Zoom on May 20th with Mr. Sireci, NTA leadership and city buildings representatives. The recommendation and course of action for the unit ventilators is that they will be disassembled, evaluated and thoroughly cleaned; the level of filtration on the units will be increased; open areas behind will be sealed and maintenance will be stepped up to prevent the intake of of dirt. The replacement of water damaged ceiling tiles and a thorough cleaning of classrooms is recommended to remove any existing mold spores. The roof repairs and new windows should be key to reducing moisture infiltration and preventing future mold growth.

The L-E Health and Safety Committee will continue to monitor these issues and the city’s implementation of cleaning and maintenance procedures.

Upcoming FORJ Meeting and More Anti-Racism Resources

FORJ (Families Organizing for Racial Justice) is a coalition of school-aged families in Newton coming together to teach our children – and ourselves – how to stand up for racial equality. Please feel free to reach out to Lincoln-Eliot FORJ Liaison Lanni Isenberg at Lanni_harris@yahoo.com for more information about FORJ and how to get involved.

The next meeting is coming up this Wednesday, June 10th.  Details below.

We also wanted to share a few resources we hope might be helpful:

First, this great list produced by the Brown Bookshelf following their recent kid-friendly Rally for Black Lives, including a link to a recording of the rally (organized by authors Kwame Alexander, Jacqueline Woodson, and Jason Reynolds), places to donate, and resources for further conversations with our children about anti-racism: https://thebrownbookshelf.com/2020/06/04/kidlit-rally-4-black-lives-anti-racist-resources-for-children-families-and-educators/

CNN and Sesame Street organized a town hall, Coming Together: Standing Up to Racism: you can watch the whole thing here.

And here is a list of Social Justice Books for children, YA, and educators, organized by Teaching for Change.

FORJ City-Wide Meeting: Symptoms of COVID-19: Racial Ills in Newton Schools & Community
Wednesday June 10th meeting 7:30-8:30
Zoom password required please RSVP HERE

COVID-19 has brought not just illness, loss, and disruption of normal life, but also an increase in racial incidents.  Our Newton community continues to work on addressing the ills and injuries of COVID-19 race-related incidents in Newton.  Our hardest hit spaces are virtual classrooms.

Please come join us on June 10th as we talk with school and community leaders.  We’ll hear from community members most impacted — our students of color, their classmates and teachers.  How can we help our community to take steps toward addressing — and preventing — these racist attacks.
