Family Art Night – Volunteers Needed

Our amazing art teacher, Mrs. Sutherland, is hoping to put together a Family Art Night this spring and she needs your help to do it!

She’s seeking a few parent volunteers to help her bring this vision to life. Mrs. Sutherland would like to prepare a few art projects for students to show their parents and for parents to engage in!

The commitment would include a couple of short Zoom meetings with Mrs. Sutherland to decide upon which projects to choose, prepping materials, and help with setting up.

Family Science Night 4.27

Save The Date for our annual Family Science Night on April 27th from 5-7pm. This event will take place in the Lincoln-Eliot gym and is open to all students.

Students are invited to create a science project and present it to family, friends, and teachers on Science Night. Note: School time is not provided for this project. It is to be completed on your own time.

Everyone who wants to bring a project must sign up by filling out this form by April 19th:

https://forms.gle/kqr17qoJqk4FcmHS9

We welcome projects at all levels and abilities!  Feel free to work in teams! And even if your student is not doing a project, we encourage everyone to come have some pizza, participate in fun STEM activities/workshops, and view their classmates’ projects.

Past projects have included investigations/experiments (e.g. How fast do apples rot?, What do dogs remember?), models/demonstrations (e.g. the Solar System, Lemon battery), research reports (e.g. Marie Curie, Snails), and collections (e.g. Slime). Google is an excellent place to look for ideas — for example: https://www.education.com/science-fair/

We look forward to seeing you all there, and we can’t wait to see your projects!

CAS: Hands-On Nature

First grade enjoyed their first Creative Arts & Sciences (CAS) program this past week by welcoming Heather and Hands-On Nature to our school. Kids got to put their bug knowledge to use, reviewing what special parts make up an insect, learning about all different types of insects right here in Newton, and even going on a bug hunt right outside our school.

These enrichment programs are made possible by the LE PTO and parent volunteers. Please consider volunteering in order to continue programs like these!

Kids/Youth Clothing Donations for Peru

Do you have cool weather children’s/youth clothing to pass along? We’re collecting clothing for longtime Plowshares teacher (and Lincoln-Eliot garden grower), Ms. Magda, to take to families in the Peruvian Andes (mountains). It stays cool all year round there and they just experienced some terrible flooding. 5th grade L-E parent Lanni Isenberg is collecting gently used clothing of all kid/youth sizes for Ms. Magda to take to the families.

Lanni will be happy to pick up from you or receive porch drop-offs in Newton Corner. Looking to collect items in April. To coordinate pick ups/drop offs, contact Lanni at lanni_harris@yahoo.com. Thank you!
