What is Understanding Our Differences? – Understanding Our Differences is a nonprofit organization working in partnership with the Newton Public Schools to provide a unique and creative disability awareness program for elementary school children in grades 3-5.  Presented by volunteers, the program promotes inclusion, understanding and acceptance of people with disabilities and individual differences at our schools and in our community.

What’s Involved? – Parents are asked to watch a short video in advance of the program at home to get up to speed on the topic and then each parent runs a fun, small group exercise (6-8 children) to teach them about the unit. The video will show you an example of how to run the activity and then we will give you instructions for your group. We had many first time volunteers in the fall and it was a great success – the kids really enjoyed having their parents in the classroom and the parents enjoyed as well.

If you’re interested in helping please let me know or if you have any questions feel free to email me – I have volunteered the past three years and have found it to be a great experience – Understanding Our Differences is a wonderful program.
