FORJ December Updates

Coming up in January 2021, check out Dr. Eddie Moore Jr’s “21 Day Racial Equity Habit Building Challenge”©: https://www.eddiemoorejr.com/21daychallenge/#act  As families, we are often working on doing for our kids or others. This challenge is a chance to center ourselves in the work, learning and action against racism.

Also, in terms of self-care (and family care, too!), have a look at this blog by FORJ member and Newton North High School parent Amy Behrens about helping to move through the stress cycle: a blog on ways of releasing stress for ourselves and our kids. (https://www.amybehrens.com/strategies-for-soulful-parents/release-stress-and-power-your-parenting-skills/)

If you and your kids are looking for ways to express yourselves, the ICA Teen Arts Council posted a fun “Reimagining Public Arts” exercise: https://www.icaboston.org/articles/reimagining-public-monuments?utm_source=wordfly&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=MKTGCarePackage%3AArtistVoice%2BFirstFridays&utm_content=version_A&promo

FORJ (Families Organizing for Racial Justice) is a coalition of school-aged families in Newton coming together to teach our children – and ourselves – how to stand up for racial equality.  Our Lincoln-Eliot FORJ contact is parent Lanni Isenberg, lanni_harris@yahoo.com.

STEMentors Winter Sessions for Kids

The Newton North STEMentors are hosting 6 sessions this Winter, starting on Tuesday!  There are 5 drop-in classes for K-3, 4-6, Girls in STEM, and STEAM.   For all drop-in classes, parents will receive a Zoom link and a list of needed household materials in advance. Classes are hands-on and station-based.  All materials are likely ones students already have at home, such as water, pennies, cups, markers, etc.  On January, 13th, we will also be hosting Dr. Ken Lutchen, Dean of Engineering at BU, to talk about his experience as a biomedical engineer.

More info and the Sign-up Genius are on our website: STEMentors UPCOMING EVENTS

Newton Public Schools Internet Filtering

Dear Newton Public School Families,

We have recently contracted with an internet filtering company, Deledao. We have already been filtering access to the internet from within a Newton Public Schools (NPS) building, but were not able to filter devices when off of the NPS network. This change means NPS devices and accounts will have NPS filtering while connected to the internet at home or to any other network.

Please know that no internet filter is perfect. As we do in schools, we strongly encourage you to speak with your child about appropriate use of technology and to monitor your child’s use of devices and access to the internet. See our Acceptable Use Guidelines on the Student/Family Tech Resources Page.

Timeline for implementation:

December 9:  Elementary Filtering implemented on iPads and Chromebooks

December 16: Middle and High School Filtering implemented on Chromebooks

What is Internet Filtering?

Using predefined categories, such as “adult content,” filtering services analyze websites a user is trying to view to determine whether or not to allow access. The service is set-up to block certain content by category. We are not able to customize for each child, but are customizing settings by level (elementary, middle and high school).

On a Chromebook (not an iPad) this filtering product also involves “real-time” analysis of videos and images. For example, if a child is watching a Youtube video, and the system detects content that matches a blocked category, it will blur the content of that video.

Impact:

  • iPads: Students using an NPS issued iPad will begin to be blocked from accessing certain websites

  • Chromebooks and NPS Google Accounts:

    • A new extension called Deledao will be installed on Student NPS Google Accounts

    • Students will be blocked from accessing certain websites

    • Filtering will affect Chromebooks and Chrome browsers when logged in using an NPS student GSuite account

    • “Browse as Guest” on NPS Chromebooks will be disabled – students MUST sign in to Chromebooks with their NPS Google Accounts

We are new to this product and expect to have to adjust settings during implementation. The web filtering product also comes with a parent portal option. Once we have implemented the web filtering, we will test the use of the parent portal to determine feasibility of implementation later this school year.

Please note that we are purchasing this product for the remainder of the 2020-2021 academic year only. We will reevaluate the purchase of the product for 2021-2022 based on performance and available budget.

Thank you.
Steven Rattendi, Director of IT and Libraries

Principal / PTO Update 11.29.20

Dear families,

We hope you had a wonderful, restful holiday weekend!  Thank you to everyone who participated in our Lincoln-Eliot Gratitude Flipgrid; it is heartwarming to see your faces and feel connected to all our families, both hybrid and DLA.  There’s still one more day to participate if you want to submit a video — the Flipgrid code is f39f39be, and you can sign in with an NPS email to share a video of what you’re grateful for.  (Remember that each video must be approved before it appears, so you won’t see it show up right away.)

We also wanted to let you know that in addition to the L-E Holiday Helpers, Village Bank is having a similar program:

The Village Bank has partnered with the Newton Rotary and the city of Newton Department of Health and Human Services to sponsor the city’s annual Holiday Gift Drive.  We have seen a significant increase in need this year and our number of families requesting assistance has nearly doubled.  We are confident that the community of Newton can meet this need with enthusiasm and support!  Gifts should be for children ages newborn to 10 and may include age-appropriate toys, games, electronics and sporting goods as well as gift cards from local merchants.  Gifts can be dropped off to any Village Bank location in the City.  Other ways to give include purchasing and shipping online gifts through the Amazon Wish List (Holiday Gift Drive (village-bank.com)) or making tax-deductible cash donations to the Newton Rotary.

Elementary Progress Conferences
Fall conferences begin this week; please reach out to your teacher if you have not yet set up a time for a Zoom conference with them.  A reminder that Monday, December 7, and Thursday, December 10, will be “early release” days (no live afternoon instruction) for both DLA and hybrid students, to enable classroom teachers time to meet with all families.

Have a great week!

Elementary School Survey Reminder

Tomorrow, November 30th, is the last day to fill out the survey sent out by Newton Public Schools.  Per Superintendent Fleishman’s email:

“Attached is a survey, which gives you the opportunity to provide feedback on your child(ren)’s  academic and social and emotional experiences.  This information will be invaluable as our elementary team continues to work to meet the needs of students under very challenging circumstances.”

Principal / PTO Update 11.22.20

Dear families,

A reminder that this Wednesday, Nov. 25th is an early release day, with school ending at 12pm, and there will be no school Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Some of you may have seen the Gratitude Flipgrid set up by the DLA.  We have created one for Lincoln-Eliot as well, and we would love to invite all our to students contribute to it, both hybrid and DLA!  We miss seeing everyone every day, and we thought it would be a nice way to connect all the kids.

Lincoln-Eliot Gratitude Share Flipgrid

The Flipgrid code is f39f39be.  Please sign in with an NPS email and have your kids make a short video (30 seconds or less) sharing what they are grateful for.  (Note that each video must be approved before it appears, so you won’t see it show up right away.)  Videos can be uploaded anytime between now and November 30th!

Elementary Progress Conferences
The window for fall conferences is December 2-10.  These conferences provide an opportunity for families to hear about how the school year is going, and as a key to building and strengthening home-school connections.  Teachers have been in touch directly with families with a sign up for these Zoom conferences.  Please note that Monday, December 7, and Thursday, December 10, will be “early release” days (no live afternoon instruction) for both DLA and hybrid students, to enable classroom teachers time to meet with all families.

We wish you all a wonderful, safe Thanksgiving break!  However you celebrate, we hope you have a chance to rest, take a break from screens, and go outside over the long weekend.

Newton Schools Foundation Liaison Needed

The Lincoln-Eliot PTO board needs a volunteer for a new position: liaison to the Newton Schools Foundation.  The time commitment is minimal but the impact can be significant.  Click here for a more detailed description of the liaison role:  NSF Liaison Description

NSF funds grants in the Newton Public Schools that support professional development for educators, new approaches in the classroom, and programs that address both racial and income inequities and enable all students to achieve their full potential.  Their mission is to advance excellence and equity in the Newton Public Schools.

You may have heard of them through NSF fundraising programs like Newton Inspires and Honor Thy Teacher.  NSF-funded initiatives that have impacted elementary school students in particular include:  Instrumental Music Programsa program for students piloted at Lincoln Eliot where professional instrumentalists support ensemble music programs and give individualized instruction to students who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity for private lessons; and district-wide initiatives such as AuthorFest, a one-day event bringing authors and illustrators to all middle schools to engage students in the writing and illustrating process; Integrated Arts CurriculumPositivity Training; Therapies for Severe Speech Sound Disorders; and Families Organizing for Racial Justice.  NSF has more recently funded programs that address our unique times with the purchase last spring of Chromebooks for distribution district-wide to those in need of a device for remote learningand this past summer’s National Educator Anti-Racist Conference.

The NSF Board would like to collaborate with PTOs to strengthen the relationship between the schools and the NSF donors who fund these programs.  With a better understanding of NSF’s mission and available funds, PTOs will be able to encourage principals and teachers to apply for NSF grants that will enhance educational opportunities in our school, and advise NSF of supplemental programs our school is exploring that might be grant-eligible.

For more information about NSF and the programs it supports across the Newton Public Schools, you can visit the NSF website.  If you have any questions or need more information about NSF, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Stop & Shop A+ School Rewards Program

Every year, Stop & Shop offers its customers the opportunity to earn money for their school through the A+ School Rewards Program.  This has been a great source of fundraising for Lincoln-Eliot in the past, so if you haven’t signed up yet, we’d love to ask you to join to support our school!  (If you have previously registered your card, you do not need to sign up again this year.)
