Pizza Wednesdays and Pre-Order Link

A reminder that pizza will be for sale every Wednesday after school — either out by the flagpole if the weather is nice, or inside the Jackson Rd. entrance if it is not.  Please stop by for pizza and to say hi to our 5th grade volunteers!

You can pre-order a whole pizza for $12 or purchase one onsite for $14.  Individual slices are $2 a slice.  Pre-ordering is very helpful to us for figuring out our numbers, so please take advantage of the discount and pre-order no later than Tuesday at 1pm, using this form:

PTO Update — October 16, 2022

Hello families!

We hope you are having a wonderful October!  Our Fall Festival is less than two weeks away — mark your calendars for Friday, Oct. 28th, from 5-7:30pm, and please reach out to Lanni at lanni_harris@yahoo.com if you would like to help or find out more!

A reminder that we are looking for library volunteers to help shelve the books that are constantly going in and out of the school library.  The more we can help, the more books our kids can take home to read!  To find out more and learn how shelving works, you are invited to attend a volunteer orientation on Monday, October 17th, at 8:20am (after drop-off), in the school library.  The easiest way to come in is through the library door that opens onto the courtyard off Pearl St.  If you’re not sure how to find the library, wait at the Pearl St. steps and someone will come get you!

And speaking of libraries: Lincoln-Eliot now has its very own Little Free Library!

You can find it on the corner of Jackson and Pearl St., near the benches, the flagpole, and the little bunny reading statue.  Stop by any time to take a book, add a book, or just sit and read!

 

Special thanks to LE alum & current 7th grader Jonah Sterns for building and installing the Little Free Library as part of his mitzvah project.

(If you would like to add books, we would love that — just please make sure they are children’s books!  Diverse authors and stories especially welcome!)

We are excited to announce that our 2022 Lincoln-Eliot spiritwear shop is open now through Monday, October 24th!  Shop for L-E branded T’s, sweatshirts, pants, hats, vests, headbands and more for kids and adults!  We even have NEW Leopard gear this year!

Room Connectors Still Needed!

We really need volunteers for Room Connectors!  If you have never been a Room Connector before, please sign up this year.  It is a small commitment, but is very important to making sure that our teachers feel appreciated and supported.  Many schools have 2-3 Room Connectors per class.  We aim to have 2 per class so that you can work together.  If you are a 4th or 5th grade family, it would be really great to see new volunteers!

Room Connector Role:

  • gather a contact list for families in your room and encourage people to sign up for the school directory (ASAP)
  • collect voluntary classroom funds for holiday class gifts and end of year gifts (November and May/June)
  • be the point person if your teacher needs something (communication, project, supplies,etc.)
  • share information from PTO (a ready to go email or flyer from Room Connector Coordinator) with your class contact list

SEPAC Workshop: October 18th

FORJ Update: Indigenous Peoples Day

FAMILIES ORGANIZING FOR RACIAL JUSTICE (FORJ)

FORJ is a group of diverse Newton families helping our children learn about issues of power and inequality and how to stand up for racial justice.  We seek to generate understanding and curiosity about differences in our society, and to work together towards racial equity.

INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY CEREMONIAL CELEBRATION RECAP

On October 10th, Indigenous Peoples Day Newton hosted the second annual Indigenous Peoples Day Ceremonial Celebration in Albemarle Park.  With performing artist Annawon Weedon as emcee, participants enjoyed a full day of music, sharing, dancing, listening, and celebration.  Native American Tribes from the across the nation were present and participating in the day’s program, with people coming from as far as Florida and Washington State!  U.S. Veterans from the Narragansett tribe raised a flag throughout the day.  Tribal elders described remembrances, traditions, and policy work in progress.  Legislative bills described included establishing Indigenous Peoples Day across Massachusetts, protecting Native American heritage, removing Indigenous mascots in Massachusetts, and supporting education for Indigenous youth.  A market featuring more than 40 booths included handmade art, jewelry, musical instruments, baked goods, chocolate, clothing, children’s craft activities, wellness businesses and organizations like Karaya Wellness Center and CERT (emergency response groups), the League of Women Voters, FORJ, and conservation information.  And delicious food options abounded with fry bread, tamoles vendors and much more.

Want to practice talking about some tough topics – Maybe read an article together or even have our kids take part in a FORJ Kids’ Book Club?  Let’s do that!  Lanni Isenberg, lanni_harris@yahoo.com, is FORJ Liaison to our PTO Board.  Any parent/guardian at Lincoln-Eliot may help plan or suggest activities for our FORJ efforts.  In prior years, L-E FORJ has provided resources, shared information on special events, hosted a 2nd-5th grade FORJ Kids’ Book Club, and hosted Lincoln-Eliot’s Juneteenth Celebration.

It was great to see everyone who made it to our Zoom PTO meeting; thank you for joining us, and thanks especially to Principal Morse and our two teacher representatives, Sarah Jang and Jen Terrazzino, for their updates about the beginning of the school year.

We were also so happy to welcome our first Creative Arts and Sciences program of the year, a cappella group Ball in the House, to brighten up the kids’ Wednesday with their music!
