Learn About Newton’s Indigenous History At May 4th Newton Conservator’s Annual Meeting on Zoom

Due to rising Covid-19 numbers in our region, the Newton Conservators, Newton’s all-volunteer open space advocacy and education organization, has moved its May 4, 2002 Annual Meeting to Zoom, beginning at 7 pm.

There is no charge to attend this Zoom meeting, but advance registration is required. Please register at https://newtonconservators.org/events/2022-annual-meeting-on-zoom/.

If you already purchased a ticket for the previously announced in-person dinner, you will receive an email explaining that you have already been registered on Zoom and offering you a full refund.

The meeting program remains as previously announced, with a keynote presentation on Newton: Land of the Massachusett, by two distinguished representatives of the Massachusett Tribe at Ponkapoag, the original people of the Charles River Basin and greater Boston, including Newton:

— Sagamore Faries Gray will focus on the tribe’s long history and association with our region’s landscapes. He has worked with local historical societies in both Natick and Newton, has done field research to reveal the enduring traces that indigenous land uses and technology left on the land, and has offered numerous presentations on Massachusett history.

— Tribal Elder Elizabeth Solomon will connect the tribe’s history to present policies and issues. She serves on many advisory boards, including for the Boston Harbor Islands’ Stone Living Lab, which develops collaborative approaches to managing climate change. She is committed to using her master’s degree in museum studies to bring to the forefront the voices of native communities.

Family Science Night 5.9

Family Science Night is coming on Monday, May 9th from 5-7:30. This year, the event will be in-person in the school gym. Masks will be required.

Open to all ages! Projects at all levels and abilities are welcome. Students will work independently or in teams to complete a science project of their choice. They are then invited to present to family, friends, and teachers during May 9th. Even if your student is not doing a project, we encourage everyone to participate in the activities/workshops and view their classmates’ projects. Please note: this project is voluntary and to be completed at home. School time is not provided to complete projects.

Past projects have included investigations/experiments (e.g. How fast do apples rot?, What do dogs remember?), models/demonstrations (e.g. the Solar System, Lemon battery), research reports (e.g. Marie Curie, Snails), and collections (e.g. Slime). Google is an excellent place to look for ideas — for example: https://www.education.com/science-fair/

Local STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) organizations and/or science-minded parents/guardians will also be hosting some fun and educational STEM activities/workshops.

So that we can get accurate counts for the set up, please click the link below to complete the form below by May 1 (one form per student).
