S.P.A.C.E. Camp

S.P.A.C.E. CAMP
(Summer Program for Academic and Creative Endeavors)

S.P.A.C.E. Camp is a four-week summer enrichment program run by the Newton Public Schools from July 5th through 28th.  Students entering kindergarten through 9th grade in the Fall of 2022 are eligible to attend.  We offer two programs – an upper camp (entering grade 5-entering grade 9 in the Fall of 2022) and a lower camp (entering kindergarten-entering grade 4).

LOWER CAMP – Campers are assigned into age appropriate classes led by certified elementary school teachers, through project based learning, challenges and activities which focus on our camp theme.  Our theme for lower camp last summer was, “Our Planet”.  Campers explored the wild places of our planet and learned about ways we can protect nature.  Lower Camp has a co-taught model with two certified teachers and one counselor.   Special attention is given to individual students by maintaining a low student to teacher ratio.  Lower Campers will also attend various specials throughout the week led by certified staff.  In past years, specials have included physical education, art, yoga, ceramics, boxygen, and Spanish.

UPPER CAMP –  Campers will create their own schedules by choosing from a vast amount of electives to design their own camp program.  SPACE Upper Camp has over 50 electives for students to choose from including art studios, performing arts, athletics, STEM activities, and language arts.

Wondermore Author Visits

This past week, Kindergarten through Grade 2 students had the privilege of attending virtual visits with award winning authors, Mitali Perkins (K and 1st) and Lulu Delacre (2nd). These author visits were sponsored by The Lincoln-Eliot PTO and Title I, in collaboration with Wondermore, a local non-profit organization.

Mitali Perkins has written many books for young readers. In Home is in Between, she describes the experience of navigating multiple cultures and embracing the complex but beautiful home in between. Each Kindergarten and Grade 1 student will receive their own copy of Mitali Perkins’ book Home is in Between.

Lulu Delacre has written and illustrated many of her own books and has illustrated books by other authors including The Storyteller’s Candle by Lucia Gonzalez and the acclaimed Turning Pages by Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Each grade 2 student will receive their own copy of Lulu Delacre’s book Luci Soars

Grades 4 and 5 will have their author visit on March 21st with author Maris Wicks.

LE Leopard Shirts

New short-sleeved t-shirts will be available for purchase at our pop-up table during Pizza Wednesdays! Sizes range from XS-XL. There is a limited quantity and we will not be taking any pre-orders right now. T-shirts will be available for $10 each or 2 for $15. Cash or Venmo is accepted.

As the weather gets nicer, we will look into popping up more during drop-off and pick up.

FORJ Updates

FORJ Leaders March Meeting Recap

On March 10th, leaders of FORJ teams from elementary schools, middles schools and high schools across Newton met on Zoom to share experiences and talk about events.

One extraordinary moment of the call included the voice of an elementary student who leads an “Upstander” student group at their school. The group started a campaign to recognize when students are behaving as an Upstander, someone who stands up for someone who is being attacked or bullied in some way.

There have been some incidents of racist and anti-Simetic language in and around some schools. While school principals and Newton Public Schools administrators are addressing individual incidents, the FORJ leaders are talking about developing collaborations and protocols to give families and students more tools to be Upstanders and to build awareness and support in the whole community.

Here are some upcoming FORJ events:

Burr & Horace Mann Elementary School FORJ Book Club / March 17th, 7p– 8p
Reading and discussion of King and the Dragonflies by Kacen Callender. Find for free in library, audio CDs from library, e-book on overdrive, audiobook on overdrive.

Burr FORJ Meeting / March 17th, 8p 9p
Discussion of the mayor’s recent data on Newton hate incidents/crimes, navigate a scenario involving children and race, and get together in working groups to discuss the upcoming FORJ sponsored movie night and hear from Michael Fagone, founder of the West Roxbury Diverse Libraries.

It’s 100% okay if you do not join the Book Club that precedes the meeting or vice versa!

Women’s History Month Feature: Pauli Murray

Anna Pauline “Pauli” Murray was an American civil rights activist who became a lawyer, gender equality advocate, Episcopal priest, and author. She was instrumental in the landmark “Brown vs Board of Education” court case, which determined that racial segregation in schools was unconstitutional. Her book States’ Laws on Race & Color, a comprehensive examination and critique of segregation laws across the country, was essential in the Supreme Court decision. She coined the term Jane Crow, which detailed her belief that Jim Crow laws also negatively affected Black women.

Thinking Ahead

This June will mark the second observance of Juneteenth at Lincoln-Eliot. If you’d like to join the event committee, please contact Lanni Isenberg, lanni_harris@yahoo.com.

FAMILIES ORGANIZING FOR RACIAL JUSTICE (FORJ) is a group of diverse Newton families helping our children learn about issues of power and inequality and how to stand up for racial justice. We seek to generate understanding and curiosity about differences in our society, and to work together towards racial equity.
