All-School CAS Program: Women in World Jazz

This past Friday, January 17th, Lincoln-Eliot welcomed the group Women in World Jazz to perform for the entire school (grades K-2 at 9am, grades 3-5 at 10am).

Women in World Jazz presents an educational performance featuring an international ensemble of all-female performers showcasing music from around the world.  The concert features musical styles from Cuba’s cha cha to Cape Verde’s Coladeira as well as songs from Israel, Brazil and Japan, mixed in with jazz favorites.  The ensemble’s goal is to give the audience a taste of different cultures from around the globe through the expression of music and dance.  They will be visiting all the schools in Newton this spring, starting with Lincoln-Eliot.

Ask your children which countries they heard music from, whether they got to play instruments or clap along, what they learned about the blues, and which instruments they saw being played!

This performance was brought to Lincoln-Eliot by the PTO’s Creative Arts and Sciences team and paid for by our fundraising all year long — thank you for supporting the PTO so we can keep bringing in programs like these!

Save the Date: Screenagers, Feb. 11th

On Tuesday, February 11th, everyone is invited to a showing of the documentary Screenagers at Newton North High School at 7pm.  This event is sponsored by the Newton PTO Council and four Newton elementary schools, including Lincoln-Eliot, and will be followed by a discussion and Q&A.

Screenagers synopsis:  “Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well.

“In SCREENAGERS, as with her award-winning documentaries on mental health, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.”

January 2020 PTO Meeting Recap

Thank you so much to everyone who came to Tuesday night’s PTO meeting with Superintendent David Fleishman and the School Committee members — we had a great turnout and were able to discuss several topics of importance to our community.  Most notably, there were several questions about the new building and about equity.

Principal Update 1.5.20

Dear families,

Happy New Year!  I hope 2020 is a year full of health, love, laughter, and joy for you and your family.

The home of two of our scholars was recently destroyed in a fire. Sadly, the family lost a majority of their belongings. At this time the family is in need of two dressers for the children’s clothing. If you have any gently used dressers that you would like to donate, it would be greatly appreciated. Donations can be arranged with the main office. Thank you.

PTO Meeting This Tuesday, Jan. 7th, with David Fleishman and School Committee

At our PTO meeting this Tuesday, January 7th, we will be joined by Superintendent David Fleishman and School Committee members Ruth Goldman (Chair) and Margaret Albright.

The Superintendent and School Committee members visit each school throughout the year to answer questions and provide information to each school community.  This is a great opportunity to ask questions specific to our Lincoln-Eliot community and learn more about district-wide initiatives.  If you would like a certain topic to be addressed and are unable to attend the meeting, please forward your questions to president@lepto.org and we will pass your questions along at the meeting.

For a preview of the rest of our agenda, you can view our slideshow presentation here.

The PTO meeting will take place from 6:30-7:30pm in the library.  We are hoping as many families can attend as possible.  As always, child care will be provided in the gym for the duration of the meeting.  We look forward to seeing you there!

This coming Thursday, January 9th, our 4th and 5th graders will be performing their Winter Concert in the L-E gym at 7pm!  Come see our 4th grade strings, 4th grade band, string ensemble, 5th grade band, and the 4th and 5th grade chorus perform!  Everyone is invited to attend and support our young musicians.

The music groups will also be performing for the younger grades during the school day on Thursday, so if you can’t make it in the evening, ask your kids about the concert and what music they heard!
