Principal Update 11.4.19

Dear families,

We had our first Safety Day this week.  The morning consisted of practicing an evacuation, shelter in place and lockdown drills.  Our scholars did an excellent job of quickly and quietly exiting the building, and following all protocols.  We are proud of everyone for taking the drills seriously, following directions and actively participating.

Please mark your calendars:

  • Monday, November 11th:  Veteran’s Day — No School
  • Tuesday, November 12th:  PTO meeting, 6:30pm in the Library
  • Friday, November 15th: Picture Retake Day, 9:00am
  • Wednesday, November 27th:  Early release day: 12:00 dismissal
  • Thursday, November 28th and Friday, November 29th:  No school — Thanksgiving recess

Have a great week!

Election Day Bake Sale Tuesday – Baked Goods and Volunteers Needed!

This Tuesday, November 5th, is Election Day, and we’d love your help to run another successful Election Day Bake Sale!  Please sign up here to bring baked goods or volunteer for a shift at the table.

Muffins and mini-breads and scones would be welcome for the breakfast crowd, as well as sweet treats like cupcakes and cookies for the later voters.  Allergy-friendly items are always great – please label or note anything that’s nut-free or gluten-free!

You can drop off your baked goods at the Jackson Rd. entrance on Tuesday morning or in the main office on Monday afternoon.  Thank you so much for your help!

Newton CAS AuthorFest!

This November, Newton Public Schools’ Creative Arts & Sciences program is celebrating the importance of books in our children’s lives with an AuthorFest, including visits from authors and illustrators to schools across the district to talk about the writing and illustrating process.

Lincoln-Eliot is excited to welcome author Marika McCoola this coming Friday, November 8th, to speak to our 4th and 5th graders!

And we are also looking forward to welcoming author/illustrator Jef Czekaj on Tuesday, November 19th, for our K-3 students!

Books by Jef and Marika can be ordered through Newtonville Books by clicking the book covers in this online form or by calling (617) 244-6619 — if you order or call by Monday, November 4th, and let them know your student is at Lincoln-Eliot, we will try to get them signed by the author and delivered to the school in time for the events.  (Or if you pick them up at the bookstore and send them in with your students on the day of the visit, we will ask the authors if they can sign the books then!)

And this coming Wednesday, November 6th, everyone is invited to join all 25+ authors and illustrators at the CAS Authorfest Book Sale and Signing Event, held at the Zervas Elementary School Library from 3:15 – 5:30pmClick here for a list of participating authors and their books!

Newtonville Books will be at the event with books for sale, but no purchase is necessary to attend.

It is the intention of Newton Public Schools that no student is denied participation in school-sponsored activities due to inability to pay.  A limited number of scholarships have been set aside to assist families with book purchases; please contact Stacey Moriarty at
moriartys@newton.k12.ma.us for financial assistance with the book sale.

For more details, see the AuthorFest flyer or visit CAS on Facebook.

*CAS AuthorFest is made possible by a grant from the Newton Schools Foundation, a contribution from The Village Bank in Auburndale, and your generous contributions to our PTO.  20% of proceeds from the book sale will go to Creative Arts and Sciences.

Annawon Weeden will enact a dynamic monologue tracing the history of the Wampanoag from pre-1492 to the present day.  His presentation challenges the audience to rethink their ideas about the Wampanoag and about America itself.  A member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe who grew up on the Narragansett Tribal Reservation in Rhode Island, Weeden has spent his life preserving the culture of his tribe.  In 2016, he was awarded with a Congressional Honor as Culture Bearer for New England.

After Weeden’s presentation, the audience will break into small groups for a family-friendly discussion about reconciliation.

Principal Update 10.27.19

Dear families,

Thank you to everyone for a fantastic Fall Festival, especially to the team who organized the event and the volunteers who made it all possible!

Join us on October 29 as Lincoln-Eliot Scholars Walk & Roll to School:
Getting kids to and from school safely is an important priority for your family, for the school, and for the community.  Lincoln-Eliot, along with every elementary school in Massachusetts, participates in the Safe Routes to School Program to help ensure the safety of our students.  On Tuesday, Oct. 29, we encourage students to arrive to school by foot, bus, bike or scooter.  We’ll have giveaways for the kids and information on pedestrian and bike safety.  More information on Walk and Roll to School day, and tips for safe walking and riding will be available around the school in the coming week.

Volunteers are needed to help for 30 minutes at drop off.  If you have time and are interested, it’s an easy and fun way to encourage the kids while teaching them about the benefits of walking and rolling to school.  Please email Wendy Lennon at wendylennon@comcast.net.

Lincoln Eliot’s Safety Day, October 29th, 9:00- 10:30 a.m.
As a school, we will practice our district’s updated emergency procedures and protocols both in and out of school.  This will include having students practice a fire drill, a shelter-in-place, and lockdown for times when we want to keep everyone safe inside their learning spaces.  We will also practice how to respond if there is a hostile event in our school and we need to quickly and safely evacuate to an alternative site, Our Lady Church.  The staff reviewed all procedures and protocols during our September professional development afternoon.  The superintendent also shared resources in his update that was emailed to families, Safety in the Newton Public Schools.  Some of these procedures and protocols may raise questions for families.  If you have any questions feel free to reach out to me or our school Social Worker, Julian Turner.

Please mark your calendars:

  • Monday, October 28th:  Flu shot registration due
  • Wednesday, October 30th:  Flu shot clinic
  • Wednesday, October 30th:  Early release day: 12:30 dismissal
  • Monday, November 11th:  Veteran’s Day — No School
  • Tuesday, November 12th:  PTO meeting, 6:30pm in the Library
  • Wednesday: November 27th:  Early release day: 12:00 dismissal
  • Thursday, November 28th and Friday, November 29th:  No school — Thanksgiving recess

See you Monday!

Thank You for a Great Fall Festival!

A big thank you to everyone who organized, donated, and volunteered to make the Fall Festival so great!  We raised over $2,000 for the school and had a wonderful time celebrating with all of you.  Special thank you to the Cedrone family for donating the face painter; to Principal Morrissey and the staff for their support and help with ticket sales; and to all the teachers for donating to the amazing Teacher Treat raffle!
