Principal Update 12.18.17

Dear Families,

Wishing you a happy and healthy holiday season. Enjoy the season with your families and friends. I am looking forward to a new year filled with fun, excitement and learning at Lincoln Eliot. Please be sure to read with your scholars over winter break.

Thank you to all the volunteers and shoppers who helped make the 2017 Book Fair so successful. It was amazing to see so many of you at the Cocoa and Cookies Book Fair night. Thank you to Tui Sutherland and all of the volunteers and shoppers both online and in-person.  We increased funds raised for library programs at Lincoln-Eliot by over 200% from last year. An impressive success by any measure!

Below is the 2018 MCAS testing schedule for grades 3-5. It is very important all scholars are present on testing days so please avoid scheduling family vacations on the dates below.

Mark your Calendar:

  • December 25 – January 1: Winter Vacation: No School
  • Tuesday, January 2, 2018: Scholars and staff return from winter break.
  • Monday, January 15: No School: Martin Luther King day

A few reminders from previous weeks:

  • Ready or not- winter is upon us!! Please be sure to send your scholar to school each day with a winter jacket, hats, and gloves. Winter/ snow boots will be needed once the snow arrives; as we will continue have outdoor recess daily throughout the winter. Also, please clearly label these items with your child’s name so they do not get lost or missed placed.

  • Vote for Lincoln Eliot:

This year, Watertown Savings Bank has set aside $75,000 to distribute to non-profits through the Customer Choice Awards.  The program provides customers with the opportunity to influence how the bank distributes funds in the community.  Last year, our community voted, and Lincoln-Eliot was awarded $2,099!  If you have any type of account with Watertown Savings Bank, you can cast a vote! Every customer may vote once. Voting is open until December 31, 2017. Please go to Customer Choice to vote online, or visit a branch to cast your ballot for Lincoln Eliot!

  • Arrival and Dismissal:
  • Arrival and dismissal time has become a bit chaotic and dangerous at times. As a result, I am asking you to please adhere to the following to ensure the safety of all scholars:
  • Students should only be let out of the car on the curbside of the street never into the street.
  • The blue zone (on both Pearl Street and Jackson Road) is a no parking zone; it should be used for quick drop off and pick up only
  • If coming from the Capital Street area, please cross students at the Pearl/Jackson light in the designated crosswalk; not in front of cars on Jackson Street.
  • The fire lane in the staff parking lot is a no parking zone

  • Dogs:

Dogs are not allowed on school property but we have come up with a plan that should work for all. If you choose to walk your dog to school at arrival and dismissal times, you and your dog must wait by the Flagpole on the corner of Pearl St and Jackson Rd. Make sure to inform your child’s teacher that you give permission for your child to walk to the Flagpole area on his/her own. It is imperative that you talk with your child to create a plan in case you are late. Make sure to communicate that plan to your child’s teacher.

  • In an effort to ensure student safety, we are asking for parents and teachers to remind students NOT to climb through the bushes in the front of the school when entering or exiting the building. Thank you for your assistance with this matter.
  • Help Lincoln Eliot earn funds to promote each student’s educational and intellectual growth…register with A+ School Rewards with Stop and Shop at https://stopandshop.com/school-rewards/ Our school ID code is 05887.

  • Please notify the office if you have a change of address or phone number. It is important to have up to date contact information in the case of an emergency.

Newton Public Schools Gift Policy

During this holiday season, many of us are looking for ways to show our appreciation to our amazing teachers and staff at Lincoln-Eliot. We want to remind our community of the Newton Public Schools Gift Policy. A one time, yearly gift of no more than $150 is permissible from the class, as long as no individual names are included. If you would like to show your appreciation on an individual level this holiday season, parents and children can give gifts in the form of sentimental tokens. Letters, drawings, and crafts are cherished by our teachers and staff. NPS also encourages families to recognize specific staff members with a donation to the Newton Schools Foundation’s Honor Thy Teacher program.

We Have A Winner…

Congratulations to Lucas Branco in Ms. Malavase’s 1st Grade Class, the winner of the Lego bricks tower!  The total number of bricks in the tower of storage containers was 2,064 and Lucas’ guess was 2,000, which is the closest number without exceeding the actual number of bricks.  Great Job!!

Cookies Needed for Thursday Evening Book Fair Event!

Cookies Needed for Thursday Evening!

Dear L-E Community,

We are so excited to get the book fair up and running Monday morning.  Thank you to those who have already signed-up to volunteer your time at the fair.  We are still in search of volunteers to make this event as successful as can be.  If you find that you can spare time this week to: work with students coming to the library to browse the wonderful array of books and make their wish lists, to help with before or after school sales, or to work a shift during the Books and Cookies Pajama Party this Thursday, please sign-up!

We are also looking for bakers (or buyers) to make or purchase cookies for our evening event this Thursday.  Please sign up here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0f49afac22a7fb6-cookies

This way, we will be guaranteed that students and families will have an assortment of delicious cookies to choose from (for free!) on Thursday.

Please have your child deliver the cookies to the main office Wednesday or Thursday or bring them to the event Thursday evening.

We look forward to seeing you at the fair!
