Pull Cans for Kids: Please consider donating your soda can tabs to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children “Pull Cans for Kids” campaign.  Tab donations can be left in the “Box Tops” box located near the Main Office.  From June, 2013 to January 2014, we collected 13,400 tabs.  Keep up the good work!

NCA Strawberry Festival, June 12th:  Join us at the Newton Cultural Alliance’s Second Annual Strawberry Festival on Thursday June 12th from 5:30 to 7:30pm. The Strawberry Festival is being hosted by Alderman Vicki Danberg at 30 Chase Street in Newton Centre. Hats off to the NCA! Come celebrate our banner year with sweet strawberries, lovely libations and fun! Featuring a special performance by Newton’s own Americana band Waiting for Neil. Come & learn more about how Newton’s Students for a Greener World are actively addressing environmental issues, including: achievements at Burr, Cabot, and Mason-Rice elementary schools; cafeteria recycling at Newton South High School; Greengineers and Enviro JAM at Newton North High School; and various other projects & programs including the recent the annual Newton Student Enviro Art Contest. Students for a Greener World are part of Green Decade Newton (GDN), which will also present our annual Environmental Leadership Awards to Nathan Phillips for his outstanding contributions, the High Performance Building Coalition for fostering sustainable pubic building projects, and Boston College for their sustainable practices on their campus.

 

There are still some openings for kids in grades 1 – 6 in the Newton Youth Players adapted summer production of the all time favorite hit Annie’ inspired by the well-known comic strip. Based on Little Orphan Annie and her dog Sandy and their search for a family of their own in depression-era New York City. Popular songs include Tomorrow, It’s the Hard-Knock Life, Maybe and You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile. From June 30 – July 24, 9am – Noon at Newton City Hall, young actors work with specialists in drama, music, scenery design and choreography, culminating in a wonderful musical production.

New Newton music school opens its doors this summer at Greater Boston Chinese Cultural Association (GBCCA)
May 22, 2014 – The Maestro Musicians Academy is announcing the grand opening of its West Newton location on July 1. Specializing in instrumental and vocal music instruction, the music school serves ages 4-104. Instruments taught include violin, viola, cello, piano, and voice.

The Maestro Musicians Academy will kick off its first year at the GBCCA at 437 Cherry Street with a special Father’s Day Instrument Petting Zoo on Sunday, June 15 from
1-3 PM. This hands-on activity will allow children ages 4 and up to explore the instruments and hear faculty members play.

Music teachers at the Academy are highly trained professionals who love working with kids. According to artistic director Daniel Broniatowski, D.M.A., “music lessons provide the ideal creative growth-opportunity in our communication-deprived digital society. The Maestro Musicians Academy is Parent tested, Child approved, meaning that we strive to make every child and parent feel inspired in a positive, yet structured environment.”  Throughout the school year, lessons run on a 16-week per term basis. Apartment Needed: The close friends of a former Lincoln-Eliot family are immigrating to Newton from war-torn Syria and looking for a 2-3 bedroom apartment to rent in the general vicinity of Lincoln-Eliot ASAP. They are lovely, responsible and kind people, who have ample income to rent.  The L-E family is also willing to co-sign the lease for added peace of mind for the landlord. Newton Boys & Girls Club: If you have not signed up for Camp, now is the time! We still have space available in all of our sessions for both ages 6-12 and our unique Teen Camp for ages 13 and up! Camp will begin on June 23rd!

Also, Arts Week is next week!  The kids have been working hard to put on some great performances. Please come out to show your support!

Kids ages 6-12: The goal of our camp is to provide opportunities for children to explore their creative and athletic potential while cultivating friendships and sharing new experiences with their peers. We believe we have achieved the perfect balance of free play, structured play, small and large group activity. We have done all of this while maintaining an impeccable safety record for over 50 years.

Teens ages 13 and up: Teens will get the opportunity to attend all Tuesday and Thursday field trips with the rest of the summer camp.  During the afternoons on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, teens will get to hear from guest speakers from various career backgrounds including, Susan Tran of Channel 7 News, Phil Lipof of Channel 5 news as well as the opportunity to get an inside look at the Marriott Hotel and The Village Bank.  Guest speakers will include people from the fashion industry, music and dance industries, the world of politics, the medical field and many more!  Click here to see the current Teen Schedule.

 

Saturday, June 7th: Boot Camp at the West Suburban YMCA 276 Church St. in Newton 7-8am Come enjoy a workout with Underwood’s own Donna Tartaglino-Fahey and help support our Summer Mission Trip to Belize. Bring water and your enthusiasm!

 

Saturday, June 14th: Kids Carnival at the Newton Presbyterian Church playground at 75 Vernon St. from 10am – 2pm Come enjoy a day of family fun! There’ll be a bounce house, cake walk, face painting and LOTS of fun and games

 

COMMUNITY MEETING REGARDING PROPOSED MEDICAL MARIJUANA DISPENSARY
Date:   Thurs, May 29th, 2014
Time:   7:30 p.m.
Location:  Room 202, City Hall
Garden Remedies, Inc. has been granted a provisional license by the State of Massachusetts to open a medical marijuana dispensary at 697 Washington Street in Newtonville. They have asked the Ward 2 Aldermen to call a meeting so they can share their plans for the dispensary with the community.  Dr. Karen Munkacy, the Chief Executive Officer of Garden Remedies, and members of her team will make a brief presentation and then will be available to answer questions.  We will also explain the special permit process needed to approve this project.
