NOT A “GOODBYE”…

Dear Lincoln Eliot Community,

This is not good-bye! After twenty-one years as the P.E. teacher for the Lincoln Eliot School, it is time for a change. I have accepted a new position in Newton as a traveling support P.E. teacher and A.P.E teacher.

This move is bittersweet for me because I love the Lincoln Eliot community so very much. Over the last two decades Lincoln Eliot has been my home and family. It is hard to think of not seeing my kids every day. Oh, how I will miss them. I have many bonds and connections that have been made over the years and they will remain intact even though I will no longer be the L.E. Physical Education teacher. They stay with me because you are all in my heart. I am so very grateful to my colleagues and to the families of Lincoln Eliot for all the life experiences and lessons that I have learned over the years as they have shaped who I am today.  I thank you.

However, as I move on professionally, I told you this is not good-bye.  A big part of me will remain at Lincoln Eliot. Her name is Sarah. They say it takes a village and I can’t think of a better neighborhood for my girl to go to school. I know I leave her in loving and caring hands and I am proud and happy to be a Lincoln Eliot parent.  So as a parent, I invite you to join me in welcoming Mr. David Rota, as the new P.E.H.W. teacher of the Lincoln Eliot School. I am sure that he will come to love Lincoln Eliot as much as I do!
All the Best,

Ms. Susan J. Marble

Mon. June 9 L-E Music Room; 6:30pm PTO Meeting

THANK YOU…
Understanding Our Differences is a non-profit organization that works in partnership with the Newton Public Schools to teach elementary school children an understanding and acceptance of people with disabilities in our schools and in our community.  Entirely led by parent volunteers, the curriculum focuses on teaching that we all have strengths and challenges and can be a friend or ally to someone by supporting those who are different from ourselves.  Students participate in six different units, one each fall and spring, during grades 3-5.

The 3rd and 4th grade classes recently participated in the Blindness and Low Vision unit and the 5th graders learned about Autism Spectrum Disorders.  Both units included an introduction to the disability, followed by participation in hands-on activities and a speaker presentation with time for student questions and answers.   Students are wonderfully engaged in these activities and eager to create a supportive, respectful community.
Special thanks to the teachers and Principal Uretsky for their support and assistance, as well as participating parents – Miriam Alandydy, Debbie Berechman, Shaul Berechman, Samira Karachi, Cathleen Morrison, Petia Nikolova-Shea, and Mike St. Germain.

SAYING GOODBYE…
After much deliberation I have chosen to leave Lincoln-Eliot at the end of the year and take a position at Horace Mann. I am excited and looking forward to the changes and challenges of working in a new health room and community. I have enjoyed working with the Lincoln-Eliot community and will especially miss taking care of the children who I have grown to love.

Thanks for all your support,
Elissa Matloff

Each school year Newton South High School hosts up to 20 international students through Educatius International.  These students come from many different countries – Italy, Brazil, Chile, Norway, and China to name a few.  Visiting students go through an application process before they are selected- they are smart, mature, and passionate about intercultural learning opportunities.  Our international students bring so much to the hallways of NSHS and our Newton community.

Host families are to provide a warm and supportive home and family environment; students should become part of your family. We welcome any family (with or a without a high school student of their own) who is excited about this opportunity.  Educatius offers a monthly stipend of $700.00 for each student placed in their home and each family can host up to 2 students ($1,400.00).  Educatius also works with host families to match them with a student who shares the family’s interests and values.  Hosting a student can provide you with amazing opportunities and lifelong friendships. Open your heart and your home…share our unique community! Invite a NSHS international student into your home.  These students will be arriving for the September 2014 school year.  To learn more and apply to become a host family, please contact Jodi Del Razo at Jodi.delrazo@educatius.org or call her at 617-543-8626.
