Looking for an affordable, conveniently located, after-school activity for your child? Newton Community Education is offering the following classes AT LINCOLN-ELIOT this fall: Lego Machine Power & Robotics (Thursdays, Grades 2-4), Actors Studio (Wednesdays, Grades 1-5), and a new class called Science Lab (Thursdays, Grades K-1). We will also be offering Spanish Club for Grades K-5 at Lincoln-Eliot. NCE offers many other weekday afternoon classes like Mixed MediaSports JamWicked Gross Lego Imagineers, Lego Machine Power & Robotics, Chess, FencingPottery, and Archery at other nearby Newton schools.   • The Annual L-E Halloween Dance is happening on Friday, October 24, 2014 from 5-8pm in the Gym.  We are looking for volunteers to help with this event.  Please contact Carol at carolandnoah@comcast.net  if you can help out!  More info on this event will be forthcoming.

  • Newton Child Assault Prevention (CAP) Program Seeking Volunteers Are you someone that believes that all children have the right to be “Safe, Strong and Free?” If so, then join our dynamic team of trained CAP volunteers who are committed to teaching children in the Newton Elementary Schools the skills that they would need to stand up for themselves if faced with a situation involving verbal, physical or sexual assault. We are now accepting applications for the 2014-2015 school year. The next multi-session training begins on October 18th. 19 Continuing Education Credits available for MSWs.   • Newtonville Village Day & Jazz Festival: Noon – 5pm Walnut Street, between Washington Street & Otis Street

Discover Newtonville, and all its merchants and businesses that will open their doors to welcome neighbors and visitors!  Once again, Walnut Street in Newtonville will be closed to traffic and transformed into a lively street fair. With two sound stages, a Roaming Railroad for kiddie rides, 100 craft booths and informational stands, an Open House at the Norumbega Fraternity Lodge of Masons featuring a bounce house and carnival games and fun activities for kids, there is something for everyone in the family to enjoy. The Senior Center Sound Stage features a talented line-up of jazz musicians, sponsored by New England Jazz Productions.   • Gala Concert September 28 for 3rd annual Roman Totenberg Young Musicians String Competition The winners of the 3rd annual Roman Totenberg Young Musicians String Competition held in memory of Professor Roman Totenberg , will appear in Concert  at the Newton Cultural Center at City Hall, 1,000 commonwealth Avenue, Sunday, September 28 at 2:00pm. Students competed in five age categories and ranged in ages from 8 to 18. Violinists Daniel Stepner and Markus Placci served as judges. Stepner has been the Artistic Director of the Aston Magna Festival and is a Professor of the Practice at Brandeis where he has been the first violinist of the Lydian String Quartet since 1987. He is a founding member of the Boston Museum Trio and has served as Concertmaster of the Handel and Haydn Society for 24 years.

Markus Placci has performed in solo concerts and recitals throughout Europe, the United States, South America and Asia and since 2009  has been on the Violin Faculty at The Boston Conservatory.

Sponsored by the Mayor’s Office for Cultural Affairs, and Newton Community Pride, the Competition was founded by Dr. Vera Rubin, who was a student of Roman Totenberg and became a dear friend. The Totenberg daughters Jill, Amy and Nina Totenberg (NPR Supreme Court reporter) has applauded Dr. Rubin for founding this event to honor their Dad. “We Totenberg sisters cannot think of a better example of our father’s legacy than this competition. Mr. T., as he was known so enjoyed young people, and they kept him young, even in his 101st year.” “We can almost hear him saying, “Hurrah to all of you, … and don’t be nervous. Consider this an experience!, a wonderful experience.!”

The first prize winner of the Senior Division (ages 16-18) will receive a full sized violin valued at $18,000 made by renowned American violin maker Nikolai Tambovsky.  Also appearing will be Zlatomir Fung on the cello who placed 1st Place with Distinction at last year’s Competition.   • Paddy’s Road Race Sunday October 19th: Paddy’s Road Race, The Shillelagh Shuffle, will take place on Sunday October 19th in West Newton.  The race is committed to youth fitness and offers both youth field races as well as a 1K (.62) mile.  This is a great local opportunity for students to train for their first road race. The Youth Field Races & Kids Festival includes medals for all finishers, commemorative #1 bibs for all participants, inflatables, face painting and more.  This races cater to ages 1-12. The 1K Youth & All Abilities Race caters to youth 14 & under and athletes with disabilities of all ages.  All participants in this race receive a t-shirt, medal and timed results. The 3M race is capped at 2,500 participants this year.  The race and post-race BlocktoberFest has all the touches of Ireland including bagpipes, Irish step dancers and shillelaghs.  The race is even giving away two tickets to Ireland this year.

This West Newton tradition supports the Athletes Unlimited program, one of the largest community-based therapeutic recreation programs for people with disabilities in all of New England.  Many athletes from the program participate in this road race making the Shillelagh Shuffle truly an inclusive and unique event.   • Basketball Clinic at the JCC: Children ages 5-10 can learn the rules of the game, ball handling, passing, shooting and defense at an eight-week basketball clinic at the Leventhal-Sidman Jewish Community Center (333 Nahanton Street) in Newton. Run by recreation specialist Pete Sylvester, the clinic will take place on Sundays,October 19-December 14 from 4-6pm.
