All Lincoln-Eliot parents are invited to participate in this dynamic program – be involved in the classroom
The Understanding our Differences curriculum is delivered to Newton students in grades 3-5 by parent volunteers. In Spring, 2014 we will be delivering two different units: Blindness for 3rd & 4th, ASD (autism spectrum disorders) for 5th.
At least six parents are needed on each of the following dates to help lead activities:
Grade 3: Thursday, May 22, 2014 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Grade 4: Thursday, May 22, 2014 12:45 – 2:45 p.m.
Grade 5: Tuesday, May 27, 2014 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
There is a 2 hour time commitment on the day of the unit and a 1 hour training session at your convenience.

Guinea Pig For Adoption. We have a sweet-natured almost 2 year-old male guinea pig that needs a new home. Our kids have allergies which mean they cannot give the guinea pig the love and attention he needs. We will include all the gear you need: a large cage, food bowl, water bottle, house, nail clipper, etc. We would really like this little guy to go to a good home. The Wellness Warriors Dragon Boat Team is holding New Paddler Orientations. Exercise and support groups are so important in the fight against Cancer. The Wellness Warriors Dragon Boat Team combines both in a way that is fun and exciting. We practice together from May through August on the Charles River in Cambridge. We compete in races around New England. Man or woman, each of us has a common bond. We are Cancer survivors and caregivers. We are a floating support group and we are unique. We love to laugh, we love to paddle hard and we love being with each other. Awaken your own dragon and feel the power of pushing yourself in ways you never thought you could! The rewards are great. Free Day For Kids: Its a FREE cookie decorating at L’Aroma Cafe, next Saturday, May 10th (the day before Mother’s Day) 3pm to 5pm., no reservations or purchase necessary, open to all children. On Saturday only, please come and participate in free themed arts and crafts activities to celebrate Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month. We will be trying our hand at Indian Rongoli – making beautiful patterns on the pavement using colored rice flour, and decorating jute ‘flags’ , as well as origami.
On Sunday only is the craft fair, with many types of craft booths where you might be able to find a special treasure for Mother’s Day, as well as several food vendors. There are 3 Newton dance studios performing: Star Dance School, Creative Dance Steps and All That Jazz; and a performance by the West Suburban YMCA Band! Admission is free. The Sunday School for Jewish Studies is now accepting registrations for the 2014-15 school year. We are an independent school offering a once-a-week program for children in the greater Boston area for over 40 years. Located at the Oak Hill Middle School in Newton, we provide a Jewish education for children and families with diverse traditions of Jewish observance. The Child Assault Prevention Program (CAP) is run through the Newton community service center (NCSC). We help keep kids safe by teaching them their rights to be Safe Strong & Free!
CAP has been endorsed by PTO’s around Newton for over 20 years. We teach in 14 out of the 15 elementary schools in Newton. Recently we received a $10,000 matching donation. Our goal for this fundraising event is to raise enough money to match the $10,000 and to raise more awareness for this important program.

1st annual Asian, Pacific American Heritage Celebration
Exhibition and Film Festival in Newton
Newton celebrates Asian Pacific Heritage Month with a two part, month- long celebration beginning with an Opening Reception at Newton City Hall, Wednesday, May 7 from 7:00-9:00pm. The Reception features a photographic and art exhibition that reflects the richness and diversity of Asian cultures, Japanese Ikebana flower arrangement demonstrations and traditional Asian music, dance and martial art performances.
Continuing the celebration at the West Newton Cinema are four award winning films with Asian Pacific American themes inaugurating the 1st Annual APA Film Festival. Films start at 7:30 PM. Films include: ‘Today’s Special’ on May 14; on May 15 its ‘Mrs. Judo: Be Strong, Be Gentle, Be Beautiful’; on May21 ‘One Big Hapa Family’; concluding the Film Festival on May 22 is ‘Linsanity’. May 18th is the annual Newton 10k to benefit Dreamfar High School Marathon which challenges high school students to reach their full potential – physically, socially, emotionally, and academically – through a mentor-supported marathon training program.
New to the 10k this year is the 5k Chaser – a family-oriented 5k – whose participant proceeds will directly support the Playground Building Fund at Horace Mann Elementary. A great way to get the family together and support this important initiative to replace the aged wooden structure on Albemarle Street.
