This presentation is co-sponsored by Newton Public Schools
This presentation will cover powerful strategies to help your child develop independent executive function; teach students to internally sense the sweep of time, self-monitor in order to sustain concentration, manage pace, and complete tasks in allocated time frames; improve students’ motivation and task initiation, help them to plan homework and long-term projects/papers, and coach students to think in an organized way; and encourage self-initiative to manage homework and personal belongings.
Ms. Kristen Jacobsen, MS CCC-SLP is a trained speech-language pathologist who is Co-Director at the Cognitive Connections Executive Function Practice. She is currently working with Newton Public Schools to develop an Executive Function program for middle school students. She provides training and coaching for teachers and professionals, parent consultations, as well as student coaching services. Final Reminder: Turn In Your Box Tops by Feb. 13th!

Please bring in your Box Tops before February 13th so they can be included in our school’s April check – it’s our last chance this school year to earn cash for our school.  All Box Tops turned in after this date will go toward next fall’s check.

Box Tops collection sheets can be sent back in the blue folders or dropped off in the main office; you can also bring in Box Tops in ziploc bags if you don’t have them on a sheet.  Thanks very much for your help!

Principal Update 2.4.19

Dear Families,

Well, it certainly feels like winter out there. With the dip in temperatures, many of you may wonder how we make decisions about whether to have indoor or outdoor recess. Consistent with other NPS elementary schools, we use the Child Care Weather Watch resource to determine when it is safe to go outside. Each day, we check the “feels like” temperature (temperature after accounting for wind chill) to determine whether we will have inside or outside recess. We use the 20 degrees minimum temperature for outside recess. This is within the threshold of the yellow/caution zone.

We know our children benefit from fresh air and exercise and we wish for them to get outside as much as possible. Staff and families have also observed that there have been a number of days in the past when the temperature was just below 20, but it was lovely outside! We want kids to go out AND we need to keep them safe! Depending on “yellow zone” conditions, we may also elect to shorten the amount of time children are outside. We will make those judgments on a case-by-case basis. You can help us by making sure that your child comes to school with warm clothing: coats, mittens/gloves, hats, and snow pants.

Winter Walk and Roll to School Day

Remember that this Thursday, February 7, is Lincoln-Eliot’s Winter Walk and Roll to School Day. Students are encouraged to arrive to school by foot (or bike or scooter – weather permitting).

As we recently experienced, winter weather can create extra challenges in commuting to school. The Massachusetts Safe Routes to School Program, which sponsors the Winter Walk to School Day, offers the following tips to keep our kids safe getting to and from school in the winter.

  • Wear layers that hold in the heat and are easy to remove once inside the building. Bright and reflective clothing or backpacks help so drivers can see you.
  • Keep heads and hands covered with hats and mittens. Use a scarf to cover your face and a warm coat that deflects the wind.
  • Stay dry by wearing waterproof boots with a sturdy sole. Keep an extra pair of socks in your backpack in case feet get damp.
  • Plan extra travel time, walk slowly and be cautious of ice or areas the appear wet or dark on the pavement.  Avoid shortcuts where snow might not be removed.
  • Walk like a penguin — Point toes out, walk with wide, slow steps and keep your hands free to help with balance. Hold on to stair railings where available.
  • If you can’t see drivers, they can’t see you! Look all around when crossing the streets. Sneak a peek around snowbanks before you proceed to safely cross the road. Listen for oncoming cars, plows or other hazards.

Join Us for Family Movie Night this Friday, Feb. 8th!

This Friday, February 8th, at 6pm we’ll be having our annual Family Movie Night!  The movie this year, by popular vote, is SMALLFOOT, a musical yeti adventure for the whole family.

Admission + popcorn is $5, and pizza will be for sale in the cafeteria.  We would love a few more volunteers to help with pizza, popcorn and ticket sales: please sign up at this link!  Also, please note this is not a drop-off event; parental supervision is required at all times.  Everyone is welcome to wear pajamas!

More about Smallfoot:  An animated adventure for all ages, with original music and an all-star cast, Smallfoot turns the Bigfoot legend upside down when a bright young Yeti finds something he thought didn’t exist—a human.  News of this “smallfoot” throws the simple Yeti community into an uproar over what else might be out there in the big world beyond their snowy village, in a story about friendship, courage and the joy of discovery.

We hope to see you there!  🙂

Walk and Roll to School – volunteers needed!

This Thursday, February 7, is our Winter Walk and Roll to School day.  Volunteers are needed in the morning from 8 am to 8:25 am to greet the kids and help hand out promotional items about safe commuting to school. The time goes very quickly and the kids are really appreciative. We want to be sure we have someone stationed at each place where volume is heavy.  If you are interested, please email or text Wendy Lennon: wendylennon@comcast.net or 617-584-0531. Thank you.

Last Chance for Lincoln-Eliot Spirit Wear!

Our online Lincoln-Eliot Spirit Gear store will be closing soon, so now is a great time to check it out (and make sure you’re ready for the next school spirit week!).  Please get your orders in by Sunday, February 10th!

There are over 90 products to choose from, including clothing, blankets, pet products, bags, outerwear, and much more!  A portion of the proceeds goes to support the programs and resources funded by the PTO.  We appreciate your support!

Turn In Your Box Tops!

It’s Box Tops submission time again!  Turn in your Box Tops before February 13th so they can be included in our school’s April check – it’s our last chance this school year to earn cash for our school.  All Box Tops turned in after this date will go toward next fall’s check.

Please wear your Patriots gear (or red, white and blue) on Friday to support our home team before the game on Sunday!
