Newton Little League Spring Season Registration now open

Registration for the 2019 Newton Little League Spring Season is now available on the league’s website: www.newtonllbaseball.org

Newton Little League serves players who reside within or attend private or public schools within the boundaries of Ward, Underwood, Lincoln-Eliot, Horace Mann, Peirce, Cabot, Burr, Franklin, and Williams elementary schools, and provides programs for players ages 4 through 12.

Programs for younger players are based on school grade, and teams are put together based on elementary school and friend requests: T-Ball (Pre-K), Rookie (Kindergarten), Farm (grade 1), and Single A (grade 2).

In our programs for older players, teams are put together with more of a focus on competitive balance: AA (grades 3-4), AAA (grades 4-6), and Majors (ages 10-12).

There is also a Challenger division for students with special needs who wish to enjoy the game of baseball.

All players interested in playing in the 2019 AAA division must attend an evaluation session and complete registration prior to the evaluation date.  AAA evaluations will be held on Saturday January 26, 2018 from 6-9 PM.  This event will also serve as the Majors Division makeup evaluation for players who were unable to attend tryouts in the fall.  AA evaluations will be held on Saturday February 2, 2018 from 6-8 PM.  The location for both events is the Newton North High School SOA.

Please contact us at info@newtonllbaseball.org with any questions.

December School Health Newsletter

The school nurses are seeing the usual uptick in winter illness – colds, stomach bugs and fevers. It remains important for families to keep sick kids at home, in accordance with school policy. Students cannot return to school until they are fever-free for at least 24 hours, without medication like Tylenol, Advil or Motrin. These guidelines are also good common sense for adults in the workplace. The checklist below can help families determine when to stay home and when to return to school or work.

https://www.mass.gov/files/documents/2016/07/xb/flu-symptom-check-list.pdf

Along with the symptoms mentioned on the checklist, here are additional symptoms to stay home with:

  • Communicable disease diagnosis
  • A cold in the active stages – coughing, sneezing, nasal drainage
  • A sore throat and/or swollen neck glands
  • Vomiting or diarrhea in the past 24 hours
  • Acute pain that requires relief by narcotic medication
  • An undiagnosed rash or skin eruption

The Newton school nurses monitor illness in the schools and are available for any questions or concerns. It’s important to notify the school nurse of any diagnosed condition such as influenza or strep throat. It may seem elementary, but in conjunction with a flu vaccine, thorough handwashing is the best way to prevent all kinds of illness including the flu.

How to wash your hands:

  • Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
  • Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
  • Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
  • Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
  • Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them

If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers can quickly reduce the number of germs on hands in some situations, but sanitizers do not eliminate all types of germs and might not remove harmful chemicals.

Flu vaccination for all people age 6 months and older continues to be recommended.  It’s not too late get a flu shot!  Call 617-796-1420 to make an appointment for vaccination with the public health nurse at City Hall.

Thank you all, and have a great week!

What is the NPS Equity Committee?

Newton Public Schools are committed to academic excellence, educational equity, and social and emotional learning. Socioeconomic diversity among the neighborhoods in Newton has led to some PTOs raising far more money than others. This disparity results in significant inequity in the supplemental support our schools receive. Click here to learn more and attend Tuesday’s PTO meeting (1/8, 6:30-7:30 p.m.) to meet members of the NPS Equity Committee and hear about their work.

PTO Meeting Tuesday, January 8th

Please join us for our third PTO meeting of the year on Tuesday, January 8th, from 6:30 – 7:30pm in the school library.  Come hear about our upcoming community fun/fundraising events, including Family Movie Night and our 80th Year celebrations (1939-2019).  We’ll also have special presentations about the work of the NPS Equity Committee and about the Understanding Our Differences disability awareness program.

Please enter at the Jackson Rd. entrance. Complimentary childcare provided in the gym. Hopefully see you there!

Happy New Year!

Volunteers Welcome in the School Library!

Are you interested in supporting the school, meeting your child’s classmates, spending time with books, and helping out our hard-working librarians?  Consider volunteering in the school library!  The librarians are always looking for help with shelving and checking in books, and have had very few volunteers so far this year — so they’d really appreciate the help!  Time slots are flexible and always available, and it’s fun to see what happens in library class and how the kids find books and interact with each other.

All you need is about 15 minutes of training — contact secretary@lepto.org or kinneyr@newton.k12.ma.us to set up a time or with any questions!  And then check out the library’s volunteer website to see when your child’s class has library, or click here to sign up in whatever time slot works for you.

Our librarians say thank you!  🙂
