Principal / PTO Update 10.10.21

Hi LE families,

Please see below for updates about COVID communication and COVID dashboard as laid out by Superintendent David Fleishman.

Change to COVID Communication Protocols
As was the case last year, it is my commitment to be consistent and transparent with notifications of COVID cases in our school building. As we continue to respond to COVID scenarios, we have adjusted our communication protocols to be meaningful and informative. Moving forward, please note the changes outlined below:

    • Close contacts will continue to be notified by a public health professional and provided appropriate instructions.
    • Students in a class with a positive case will be notified immediately following the identification of close contacts.
    • Principals will notify families of the number of cases in the school per week through either the weekly eblast/newsletter or a weekly email. This notification will take the place of the “all school” notification that was previously sent on the same day as the class notification.

Please reach out with any questions or concerns.

Weekly COVID Case Number Blurb
This week, Lincoln Eliot school recorded 0 COVID cases. Information on districtwide COVID cases and vaccination rates can be found on the Newton Health and Human Services website here: NPS COVID Case Count and Vaccination Rates.

Thanks,
Principal Morrissey & the PTO

Room Connectors – a few more spots!

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help out to be a room connector this year. We have at least one person per class, but we would really like to have 2 per class to help share the workload and alleviate a few people who are doing more than 1 classroom.

Here are classes who are still in need:

1- Warren
2 – Rooney
2 – McDonald
3 – Penczar
4 – Levin
4 – Monopoli
5 – Foster/Bruns

Please contact Emily at nunezemily77@gmail.com if you are able to help volunteer.

FORJ Update

FORJ is a group of diverse Newton families helping our children learn about issues of power and inequality and how to stand up for racial justice. We seek to generate understanding and curiosity about differences in our society, and to work together towards racial equity.

INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY – Monday, October 11th
Monday, October 11th is the Indigenous Peoples Day observance – recognized by Newton and Newton Public Schools for the first time this year (and just declared by the City of Boston this week)! Join us from 12p-5p (rain or shine!) in Albemarle Field just a few miles from Lincoln-Eliot.

Indigenous Peoples Day Newton 2021 will spotlight and celebrate the music, dance, poetry, and the visual art of diverse Native artists that currently live in the Northeast. It will be an outdoor, daytime, family-oriented cultural and spiritual celebration that is open, accessible, and welcoming to all residents of Newton and neighboring towns.

The goal is to make concrete our city’s recent recognition of Indigenous Peoples Day as an official city holiday. The intention is for this event to become a beloved annual event on our city’s calendar.

Over 40 artists, performers, speakers, vendors, and community organizations will attend. Refreshments can be purchased from onsite food truck(s).  Spend the afternoon in celebration, ceremony, and support of the rich Indigenous traditions that are an enduring and vibrant facet of our community!

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH, September 15 – October 15, 2021
There are lots of opportunities to celebrate our Hispanic and Latinx families and community now and throughout the year. Check out the National Public Radio performance series, #ElTiny, a special series edition of their Tiny Desk Concerts, featuring fabulous Latin artists: https://www.npr.org/series/761981441/-eltiny-the-best-latinx-tiny-desk-concerts-vol-1

One featured person in Hispanic history is Pedro Albizu Campos (1891-1965), leading figure in the Puerto Rican Independence Movement. He spoke six languages and graduated top of his class at Harvard Law School (though was delayed from graduation due to discrimination against his mixed racial background). He was President and Spokesperson for the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party for 35 years – and was arrested for more than two decades for trying to overthrow the U.S. government. He was hailed as “El Maestro” (The Teacher) for his oratorical skill. Thank You – School Supplies for Haiti a Success!

Dear Lincoln Eliot School Community,

It is with most gratitude that I write to express my heartfelt thanks to you. What you did is beyond words. You show how much you care about children wherever they live, and no matter who they are. Your generosity surprised me. You will bring so much difference in the lives of these children. My heart really goes to you.

Thank you so very much for giving a head start to the Haitian children devastated by the terrible earthquake last August.

I will send you pictures of them using the materials. On their behalf, I send a million thanks to you and wish you a wonderful new school year, healthy and safe.

Gratefully yours,
Nicole St.Victor

Principal / PTO Update 9.27.21

Hi Families,

Due to a state-wide supply shortage of tests, COVID pool testing was delayed this past week for several NPS schools, including Lincoln-Eliot. We are scheduled to begin pool testing this week provided our supplies arrive on time. We thank parents for their patience.

On September 20, 2021, the School Committee voted to approve the revised design enrollment and space program for the Lincoln-Eliot School building project (8 in favor with one abstention).  The project will be a 20 classroom school with two dedicated special education classrooms and will have ample breakout, support and resources spaces, and cafetorium, gym, library, art and music spaces that can support enrollment growth and fluctuations.  The project will be comparable in size and design to the Angier, Cabot, and Zervas Elementary School projects but on a larger site with playground and generous green space.  The design team will now move forward to develop multiple renovation/addition and new conceptual design options to meet the space program.

The next monthly Lincoln-Eliot School Building Committee/Community meeting is
