Principal / PTO Update 9.5.21

Hi Lincoln-Eliot Families,

Welcome back to a new and exciting school year. We are so excited to have everyone back to the building this year, both brand new families joining our Lincoln-Eliot community and families returning after a remote year.

For those of you who missed or weren’t able to attend the virtual info meeting last Wednesday 9/1, the presentation can be found here. Logistics of arrival & dismissal, snack/lunch, and testing were all discussed.

Please also mark your calendars for a virtual Back to School night on October 5th. Details to follow from your teacher.

We look forward to seeing everyone for the first day of school on Thursday!

Join the LE Directory

It’s as easy as:

* Go to lepto.membershiptoolkit.com and click on “Login”, then follow the instructions from there.

* Make sure all your students are listed, in the correct grades, and that your contact information is up to date!

If you’re new to the directory, it may ask you to create a new account. However, if your email address is already in there, it should link that new account to the information we have. Once your new account is approved, you will be able to view the school directory!

Even if you’re already in the directory, please take a moment to double check your information and update your profile by adding any incoming students and/or teacher assignments. That way, you can find out who else is in your child’s class and connect with them!

If you need help, please email secretary@lepto.org

YOU ARE THE PTO

Good news! You’re already part of the PTO by simply having a child at Lincoln-Eliot! Looking to get more involved with the Lincoln-Eliot community? Want to help further enrich your child’s experience in school through Creative Arts & Sciences programs? Come join the PTO board and help out with anything from planning school-wide events like the Science Fair to even being a co-President!

Contact secretary@lepto.org for any questions or if interested.

Become a Special Education Decision Maker

Are you interested in being a Special Education Decision-Maker for students in your community? Volunteers, known as Special Education Surrogate Parents (SESPs) under Massachusetts law, serve as appointed educational decision-makers for students in the custody of the Department of Children and Families (DCF) who are in need of special education services. Once appointed, SESP volunteers have the legal authority of a parent or legal guardian to attend special education team meetings, approve or reject IEPs, and, if necessary, file a complaint or appeal. On average an SESP spends about 30-40 hours a year volunteering his/her time.

In this FREE Orientation Training, you will learn about the role of a SESP, how traumatic experiences can impact learning, and how to incorporate the appropriate supports into the IEP.

Principal / PTO Update 6.20.21

Dear families,

It was the greatest joy in the world to see so many happy, smiling faces (and dancing feet!) at our Juneteenth celebration on Friday!  What a beautiful way to end this challenging, isolating school year.  A million thank-yous to our FORJ liaison Lanni Isenberg for bringing it all together; to our amazing emcee and host, parent Chris Worrell; to Fhynita Brinson for all her help and for organizing Juneteenth readers all week; and to all the parents who volunteered, provided supplies, and showed up to celebrate with us.

We also had a wonderful 5th grade graduation ceremony on the field on Thursday — congratulations to our amazing 5th graders and thank you to the teachers and all the families who helped set up and attended the event!

A note from the PTO:  We know this has been an especially tough year to find any extra bandwidth for school activities or volunteering, and we just want to let all of you know how enormously much we appreciate you and this community.  Whether it was coming to a PTO meeting over Zoom, donating to the Annual Fund or the clothing drive, writing welcome letters to our new families, supporting your kids with all the new schedules and technology, or expressing gratitude and love for our extraordinary teachers, every small contribution made a big difference, and we are so thankful for you.

We hope you all have a fantastic, restful, connection-filled summer, and we look forward to seeing everyone again in the fall!

Happy Juneteenth!

Lincoln-Eliot’s FIRST Juneteenth Celebration

Lincoln-Eliot was alive with energy and fun with more than 350 guests for our first Juneteenth celebration!  Kids and grown ups joined in to jump with the Double Dutch Destroyahs, featuring Lincoln-Eliot parent Suzette Worrell.  Along with some energetic L-E students and families, Principal Morrissey even jumped in!  An incredible DJ provided the soundtrack as talented Newton South student Chelsea Jones led us in the Electric Slide, the Cha-Cha Slide and Wobble and more!  We enjoyed ice cream, kite flying, ball games and lots of friendly faces!  We decorated a big Juneteenth sign with colorful hands with messages of hope and encouragement.  Special thank yous to event host/emcee/L-E parent Chris Worrell, METCO coordinator Fhynita Brinson, our L-E custodial staff, and more than a dozen parent volunteers who brought supplies and helping hands throughout the whole event!  We hope to make this an annual event!

THANK YOU, JUNETEENTH GUEST READERS!

Every Lincoln-Eliot student had the chance to hear a book about Juneteenth in their classroom last week.  Special guest readers joined in person or by zoom to read a book to each class!  Thank you to every Lincoln-Eliot teacher for finding time in your wild end of the year schedule to host a reader!  Thank you to our Lincoln-Eliot and DLA librarians for incorporating Juneteenth lessons into the last library sessions.  And thank you to our readers: Mass. State Senator Cynthia Creem; Bigelow School Counselor Jessica Pierce; Assistant Superintendent Tony Remer; Mason-Rice Elementary School Principal Jake Bultema; Assistant Principal Brown Middle School (and former Lincoln-Eliot Social Worker/METCO coordinator) Julian Turner; METCO Director Lisa Gilbert-Smith; Ward Elementary School Social Worker Kadesia Wood; Superintendent David Fleishman; Honored Uncle from one of our kindergarten families Brian Worrell; ELL specialist and Lincoln-Eliot parent Emily Nunez; NPS Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Kathy Lopes; Behavioral Therapist Loring Masters; and parents from Ms Gayle’s 1st grade classroom.  And a huge thank you to Lincoln-Eliot Social worker/METCO coordinator Fhynita Brinson for coordinating those sessions and making connections with so many local leaders and families!

LINCOLN-ELIOT FORJ KIDS BOOK CLUB – SUMMER
Since the start of the pandemic, the L-E FORJ Kids Book Club has read and discussed four books.  This group of 2nd to 5th grade students and their families covered a lot of ground, talking about topics including friendship, bullies, kids’ voices, politics, race, refugees, book characters, and much more!  We hope to read a book or two this summer, too, so contact L-E FORJ Coordinator Lanni Isenberg if you’d like to hear more: Lanni_harris@yahoo.com

JUNE IS LGBTQ+ PRIDE MONTH
June is recognized as LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Queer) Pride month.  Pride month was established in 1999 to lift the voices and ultimately, increase the rights of the LGBTQ community.  People fighting for human rights, civil rights and legal rights sometimes have to remind supporters to think inclusively.  Did you know that the colors of the rainbow flag that is known to symbolize Gay Pride have meaning?  Red is for Life, Orange is for Healing, Yellow is for Sunlight, Green is for Nature, Blue is for Serenity, Purple is for Spirit and there’s been a more recent addition of a Black stripe or multicolor Black and Brown stripes for Inclusive! GIVE TO THE METCO SCHOLARSHIP FUND
To support the 40 graduating seniors from both Newton North and Newton South as they move on to pursue their future dreams, consider contributing to The Newton METCO Community Scholarship Fund: https://www.gofundme.com/f/newtonmetcoscholar.

M.E.T.C.O. Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity is a state-funded educational program designed to eliminate racial imbalance through the busing of children from Boston and Springfield to public systems in surrounding suburban metropolitan communities.

JOIN A FORJ SCHOOL CHAPTER!
The Bigelow Middle School FORJ chapter is looking for more members. If you’d like to join their chapter this summer or in the fall OR if you’d like to join the Lincoln-Eliot FORJ chapter, please contact L-E FORJ Coordinator Lanni Isenberg: lanni_harris@yahoo.com!

FORJ (Families Organizing for Racial Justice) is a coalition of school-aged families in Newton coming together to teach our children – and ourselves – how to stand up for racial equity. We seek to generate understanding and curiosity about the differences in our society.

We strive to achieve safe and welcoming environments that enhance the well-being of all people.  We promote healing and connection between individuals and communities.  We speak out against injustice, support our kids to be upstanders, and take action to address bias and inequity.

Principal / PTO Update 6.13.21

Dear families,

Don’t forget that this Friday, June 18 there will be no school in celebration of Juneteenth.  Thank you to Fhynita Brinson, parent Chris Worrell, and our FORJ liaison, Lanni Harris, for their amazing efforts to find guest readers to share Juneteenth books in every classroom this week!

We are also very excited for the Juneteenth celebration on the Lincoln-Eliot playground on Friday, June 18th, from 4-6pm — everyone is invited to come see friends, play games, and celebrate with us!

There is one more playdate this week connecting our DLA and in-person students, for our 3rd graders, on Tuesday, June 15 from 5-6pm.

And we are having our Lincoln-Eliot Virtual Celebration Day/Week starting tomorrow, Monday, 6/14 and running until the following Monday, 6/21.  This is a voluntary initiative, but we look forward to seeing pictures of LE students and staff participating in the activities throughout the week.  You can upload your pictures here — please note that all pictures will be able to be seen by the LE community and anyone with the link, and please make sure the pictures are school-appropriate photos of students, families, and friends doing Celebration Day activities!  Pictures will be available for upload and viewing until 6/23.

Click here for a slideshow of all the Celebration Day details and fun ideas!

We also wanted to share some important Summer Reminders from the School Nurse — please click on that link for information about COVID safety, medication pickup, and ways to protect against mosquitoes and ticks this summer.

Our last day of school is Tuesday, June 22, with an early dismissal at 12pm.  It’s hard to believe we only have a little more than a week left.  We hope all our scholars are enjoying their last few days of the school year!

5th Grade Graduation: This THURSDAY, June 17th!

We are so thrilled to be able to have an in-person graduation ceremony for our amazing 5th graders, and we hope families are able to join us for this celebration of all their hard work!

The graduation ceremony will be this Thursday, June 17th, at 1:30pm on the field outside the basketball court, next to the Lincoln-Eliot playground.  (Rain date: Monday, June 21st at 1:30pm)  Families are invited to arrive at 1:15pm; please bring your own seating (picnic blankets or lawn chairs) and set up with distance between families.  (Chairs will be provided for the graduates.)

Masks will be worn by students and teachers.  For vaccinated guests, masks are optional.  Unvaccinated guests should wear masks.

The ceremony should take about 30 minutes, so we anticipate it will be over by 2:15pm.  With luck the kids will be receiving their yearbooks after the ceremony, so please feel free to stay and let them exchange signatures and celebrate together for a little while!
