In the wake of the terrible earthquake that devastated the south of Haiti, schools are not able to function. Some teachers there are trying to set up classrooms under tents with limited or no materials.
Haitian American educator Nicole St. Victor, a friend of Principal Danielle Morrissey and of Early Literacy Aide Enid Wetzner, is shipping supplies directly to early education schools she has established there over the years.

Boys and girls grades 1-5 are invited to join Newton Cub Scout Pack 210. Scouting is a great opportunity to make new friendships, and is also really fun, especially for new 1st grade Tigers, to experience with friends. We have an exciting year planned, with fun activities including camping, hiking, outdoor activities, community service, and monthly Den/Pack meetings. All meetings will be outdoors with modifications for COVID safety. Our kickoff meeting is on Thursday Sept. 23 at 5:30 pm at Arsenal Park in Watertown. The address is 485 Arsenal St and it will be at a covered pavilion, so it will take place rain or shine. A local veterinarian will talk about animal care and will bring a special friend. This free, family-centered event will feature numerous Indigenous artists from all around the Northeast- singers, poets, musicians, painters and more! You can learn more about Indigenous businesses and nonprofits at the marketplace. Participate in a talking circle. And, be sure to enjoy a delicious meal from the Indigenous food trucks!

Hi Lincoln-Eliot Families,
It was so incredible to see so many faces back in our building on Thursday for our first day of school. The energy and excitement from all the students returning filled the air. Thank you to parents who helped make pick-up and drop-off run smoothly by being prepared with using the correct entrances. It was wonderful to have all of our LE community back together again and I know everyone will settle into these new routines quickly!
Hispanic History Month is 9/15 – 10/15. In honor of and to bring awareness to the Hispanic culture Ms. Brinson, Ms. Sutherland, and Ms. Selwyn have teamed up. The bulletin board outside of the main office will showcase a colorful and cultural Mexican mural of Frida Kahlo and Day of the Dead. Ms. Sutherland will display student work representing Day of the Dead. Ms. Selwyn will read a book about the life of Frida Kahlo to all students across grades.
Frida Kahlo was a painter and a teacher who was resilient and determined. She never gave up although faced with many adversities.
Day of the Dead is a tradition to honor loved ones that have died. It has Mexican, Spanish, and Latin American roots. Culturally the two-day celebration is commemorated with food, festivities, and religious practices.
Throughout the year, the bulletin board will be used to bring awareness to marginalized populations. It is our hope that teachers will incorporate these themes into their classrooms.

INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY
October 11, 2021 will be the first Indigenous Peoples’ Day observance for Newton Public Schools and Massachusetts. The Indigenous Peoples Day Newton Committee is hosting a city-wide event featuring music and dancing, cultural discussions with elders from the indigenous community, educational exhibits, markets and food. YOUR FORJ IDEAS WELCOME
For more on the the first celebration of this holiday at Lincoln-Eliot, please contact L-E FORJ contact, Lanni Isenberg, lanni_harris@yahoo.com. Lanni is the FORJ Liaison to our PTO Board. Any parent/guardian at Lincoln-Eliot may help plan or suggest activities for our FORJ efforts. In prior years, L-E FORJ has provided resources, shared information on special events, hosted a 2nd-5th grade FORJ Kids’ Book Club, and hosted Lincoln-Eliot’s first-ever Juneteenth Celebration.
SPECTRUM, a volunteer group from Brandeis University, works with kids with autism and other developmental disorders. We offer three free programs where volunteers from Brandeis work with kids from ages 5-18, but if need be we do have volunteers who can work with younger children. Our three programs are playgroup, mentoring, and tutoring. A description image of each program is attached below. We will also be offering virtual mentoring/tutoring if requested and available.
Memorial-Spaulding School in Newton’s Oak Hill neighborhood is currently hiring various positions for the current school year! Open positions include: ISS (Instructional Support Staff) these are building-based subs (3 days per week). Lunch Monitors (4 days per week: M, T, Th, Fr – 3 hours per day). Special Education Aide (5th grade) + Special Education Aide 3rd grade (one to one). Literacy Aides (2 aides, 4 days per week: M,T, Th, Fr).
