Facilitated Inclusive Play at Recess – Volunteers Needed

This year, Lincoln-Eliot will be offering facilitated inclusive play during recess, and we are looking for interested volunteers to be facilitators of play at the three lunch recesses.  This is inclusive modeling with emphasis on providing a space in the playground where all kids can spend time together interacting with or playing alongside peers.

Adults are there to guide and encourage but not necessarily do the playing — although you can and it’s fun!  We use simple supplies like hula hoops, tennis balls, and chalk which are all donated and supplied.

Volunteers can be anyone with an active CORI on file with the office.  “On the job training” provided!  You can volunteer for 20 minutes or 2 hours, once a day or once a month; whatever schedule works for you.  Currently the three recesses happen between 12:15 and 2:20pm (weather permitting).  Our future goal is to have indoor facilitated recess but currently we are outside only.

Please email secretary@lepto.org if you’re interested in volunteering, or reach out to Margaret and PJ Smith for more details!

Lincoln-Eliot Facilities Update

Thank you to John Mulligan for attending the Lincoln-Eliot Health and Safety Committee meeting last Thursday, where David Stickney (Director of Facilities) provided an update on completed and ongoing projects at the school.  We have posted a summary of the meeting below, and you can find greater details from John’s meeting minutes at this link.

  • Roof: Many of you had to improvise getting to the Kindergarten rooms last week because of the lift truck needed to repair roof slate and gutter issues.  In that area the work is finished and remaining work should not need the truck.  Other problem areas have been identified and will require budget approval.  Temporary measures may be taken to prevent leaks if budget/work cannot be completed by winter.
  • Boilers: The second of two new boilers for heating the school has been installed and is running with all inspections completed.
  • Window and door replacement project: Unfortunately, this work was not completed over the summer, as we were hoping.  John noted the contract has been awarded but we do not know what delayed the project nor when it will start.  We have opened a line of communication with facilities to get more details and will keep you updated.
  • Bike racks: John is working with the DPW on having a new one installed.

Planning for Arts & Culture in Newton – Please take a brief survey

The City of Newton is currently undertaking a 7-month planning process to create a Comprehensive Arts & Cultural Plan for the City.

The plan, entitled Create Newton, will identify all of Newton’s arts and cultural assets – from our buildings and non-profits, to the events and festivals we host, to the local traditions and initiatives in our villages and neighborhoods. We will explore how arts and cultural goals and interests are aligned with our businesses, recreational opportunities, and commercial districts, and identify goals, set out recommendations, and seek opportunities to collaborate and expand our pool of funding.

Input from parents, and children 12 years and older, who enjoy Newton’s arts and cultural events is greatly valued. Please take 10 minutes to complete this anonymous survey to assist in the planning process:

(Please note that the survey is best taken on your computer and not on your smart phone or smaller device.)

Thank you for your time and input!

Principal Update 9.1.19

Dear Lincoln Eliot Community,

I hope you had a wonderful summer.  I cannot believe we are already starting the new school year!  We are so excited to welcome our scholars back to school on Tuesday, September 3rd, 2019.  Our first day of school is an early release day with a 12:30 dismissal time.  Lunch will not be provided.

On Tuesday and Wednesday you may bring your child directly to their classroom.  We will have staff stationed throughout the building to assist with locating classrooms.  However, beginning Thursday, September 5th, we will begin implementing the district’s drop off policy of allowing students to enter the building independently.

Please review our Blue Zone Rules and this helpful video made by Lincoln-Eliot staff and families to help us keep mornings as safe and low-stress as possible:

New Online Directory — Sign Up Now!

This year, our online directory system has been upgraded from MySchoolAnywhere to Membership Toolkit — a technology for directories, email, and volunteer signups that will hopefully be even easier to use!  If you were in our directory before, your information will still be there, but everyone will need to sign in to Membership Toolkit and create a new account to have access to the directory.  This is also a perfect way to make sure you’re in the directory and check that your information is up to date!

Register online by going to lepto.membershiptoolkit.com and following the prompts.  If you were signed up with MySchoolAnywhere, please use the same email address, so your new account can link to your existing information.

If you are new to the directory, follow the directions to input your family information and choose what you’d like to be visible.  The process takes less than 3 minutes, and then you’ll be in the directory through high school!  Once you’ve signed up, an admin will approve your access to the directory, which may take a day or two (please email secretary@lepto.org if you have any trouble or need access quickly!).

And while you’re there, check out our volunteer opportunities for the year!

You can also download the free app by searching for Membership Toolkit in the iTunes App Store or Google Play.  After you register on the website, use the same username and password you chose in the app to access the directory, manage your family information, sign up for volunteer activities, and more— all from your cell phone.

Questions?  Contact us anytime at secretary@lepto.org!

Back to School Picnic: September 12th!

Mark your calendars for our annual Back to School Picnic on Thursday, September 12th from 5:30-7pm!  (Rain date Friday, Sept. 13th)  Join us on the playground for dinner and fun; pizza and desserts will be for sale.

We need volunteers to make the picnic a success!  Time slots are short (half an hour) to make sure you can also enjoy the picnic.  Please sign in to our new Membership Toolkit directory and sign up to volunteer (or email secretary@lepto.org if you’d like to help but can’t get to the signup).

We hope to see you there!  🙂

Kindergarten Picnic August 29th!

Summer Reminders from the School Nurse

Medication Pick-up: Parents of students who have medication stored in the health room should pick it up by the last day of school, June 18. All medication (pills, epi-pens, inhalers, etc.) not picked up will be discarded. Please plan ahead to pick medication up so it is not wasted! Medication may not be carried home by the student — it must be picked up by an adult. School nurses will not be available after June 18 to return medication to families.

Medication Order Reminder: All medication orders expire at the end of the school year. If you are visiting your child’s health care provider during the summer, consider requesting a new medication order for your child. All medication, prescription or over-the-counter, requires an order. The Medication Permission Form and the Medication Policy are both available online at www.newtonma.gov/schoolhealth

West Nile Virus and Lyme Disease Prevention: Mosquito and tick-borne diseases like West Nile Virus and Lyme disease occur in Newton residents. Take steps to avoid getting sick!

  • Mosquito repellant not only works for mosquitoes, but helps repel ticks as well. Use a repellant with DEET, and follow label instructions for concentrations appropriate for children.
  • Avoid being outdoors during peak mosquito hours, particularly once West Nile Virus has been detected in the mosquito population.
  • Remove containers around your home (tires, kid pools, pots, tarps) that could allow mosquitoes to breed.
  • Check your body for ticks after being outdoors and remove them immediately to avoid disease transmission.

Shoo the flu! Seasonal influenza vaccine will be offered this fall during the school day to students and employees. The vaccine will be available to all students in Kindergarten through grade 12, by parental consent only. Consent and screening forms will be posted at www.newtonma.gov/flu by early September, in preparation for the fall clinics.

The flu clinic date for Lincoln Eliot Elementary School will be October 30, 2019. Forms (available in Sept.) will be due to the school nurse two school days prior. This schedule is confirmed unless the flu vaccine supply is delayed, in which case the school nurse will notify families of an alternative date once the vaccine arrives.

Have a happy and healthy summer!
