Help Needed for the Election Day Bake Sale

This Tuesday, November 6, is Election Day (don’t forget to vote!) and we’ll be holding an Election Day Bake Sale for the voters coming through our school.  We’re still hoping for some more baked goods, and more volunteers would be much appreciated, too, especially during the 12-1pm shift — please sign up through MySchoolAnywhere or by emailing secretary@lepto.org!

We would love muffins and mini-breads and scones for the breakfast crowd, as well as sweet treats like cupcakes and cookies for the later voters.  Allergy-friendly items are always great – please label or note anything that’s nut-free or gluten-free!

You can drop off your baked goods at the Jackson Rd. entrance on Tuesday morning or in the main office on Monday afternoon.  Thank you so much for your help!  🙂

Join us for the Special Education Basic Rights presentation next week

Please join us for this important special education event!

WHAT: Basic Rights in Special Education
WHO: Dan Heffernan, Esq., Partner, Kotin, Crabtree & Strong presented by the Newton SEPAC
WHEN: Wednesday, November 7, 2018
(Networking 7:15-7:30)
7:30 – 9 pm
WHERE: Newton Education Center Room 210
100 Walnut Street (map)
Newton, MA

Dan Heffernan, a Newton parent and Super Lawyer in special education law will present on parent and student rights in special education. This presentation includes an overview of special education law, a discussion of IEPs, the responsibilities of the school district, approaches to resolving disagreements or disputes, etc. There will also be time for Q&A.

The Basic Rights presentation helps parents and guardians to understand the legal foundation of all special education services for their children and how to work with their child’s team and the school district. It is the only presentation that the SEPAC is mandated to offer each year. It is strongly recommended that all parents and guardians new to the world of special education attend. The presentation is also helpful for anyone who hasn’t attended it in the past couple of years since new legal rulings and guidelines can change special education law over time. We hope to see you there!

Daniel T.S. Heffernan is a partner with Kotin, Crabtree & Strong and concentrates his practice on representing families of children with special needs in education and civil rights matters. He is a 1987 cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School. From 1995 to the present he has served on the board of directors of the Federation for Children with Special Needs and was board president from 1995 to 2007. He also serves on the Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress Education Task Force. Mr. Heffernan has been named a Super Lawyer in special education law every year since 2005 and was named as a Top Rated Lawyer in Education by The Boston Globe. He has two daughters and a son who has Down syndrome.

Newton Girls Lacrosse – 2019 Registration Now Open

Since 1999, NEWTON GIRLS LACROSSE (NGL) has been dedicated to providing Newton girls and their families a community-based developmental lacrosse program.  NGL is the only Newton girls lacrosse program with opportunities for all Newton girls in grades 1-8 to play lacrosse.  We encourage girls at all ages, regardless of experience, to join our program and learn lacrosse while meeting new friends, being active and competing.  The program delivers a fun, safe and inclusive youth sport environment that complements the core values our families observe at home, at school, in the community, and on the field.  Please visit newtongirlslacrosse.com to register.

Newton Family Conference: December 1

The 2018 Newton Family Conference is to be held on Saturday, December 1st from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Newton North High School. The goal of the conference is to build relationships between families of color and white families within the district, advance dialogue around issues of race, culture, and identity and create opportunities for families within NPS to connect. Participants will attend workshops on “Courageous Conversations About Race” facilitated by NPS trained facilitators. These sessions will be similar to the workshops in which Newton faculty and staff are participating.

The Family Conference is one way in which the Newton Public School District is seeking to create culturally responsive school communities with equity and excellence for all. Please RSVP at: https://2018familyconference.eventbrite.com. (Limited childcare is available.)

Principal Update 10.29.18

Dear Families,

What a wonderful turnout for the Fall Festival on Saturday — thank you to all our families who braved the rainstorm to join us and make this such a successful event!  And thank you to the PTO fall festival committee who worked so hard on everything and the volunteers who made it all happen.  The teacher treat raffle winners will be announced at school on Monday — good luck to everyone who participated!

Thank you also to everyone who made Walk and Roll to School Day a success on Thursday, especially our Safe Routes to Schools Coordinator, Wendy Lennon.

Quick reminder that we have an early release day this Thursday, November 1st.  Students will be dismissed at 12:30.

The PTO and the school also wanted to express our thanks to Rebecca Schmidt for organizing our Understanding our Differences program.  Understanding Our Differences is a nonprofit organization working in partnership with the Newton Public Schools to provide a unique and creative disability awareness program for elementary school children in grades 3-5.  This past Wednesday, the third grade students learned about low vision/blindness through a series of small group exercises, including making their own Braille messages.  And coming up on Friday, the fifth graders will be doing a unit on intellectual disabilities.  Thank you to all our parent volunteers who come in to assist with this valuable program.

Please mark your calendar:

* Thursday, November 1st:  Early Release Day — 12:30 dismissal
* Sunday, November 4th:  Daylight Saving Time: Turn your clocks back one hour
* Tuesday, November 6th:  Election Day (volunteers needed for the Election Day bake sale)
* Monday, November 12th:  Veterans Day observed — No School
* Tuesday, November 13th:  PTO meeting from 6:30-7:30pm in the library
* Wednesday, November 21st:  Early Release Day — 12:30 dismissal

Thanks very much, and have a great week!

Support Our Teachers’ New DonorsChoose Projects!

DonorsChoose.org is a great organization that allows people to donate directly to classroom projects posted by teachers.  Two of our teachers have projects that are so close to being fully funded — please support them if you can!

Mr. Raisner’s project, Flexible Stools for Students, has only $69 to go!  Please click on the link to read more about funding wiggle stools for his second grade classroom, and donate if you can!

In the third grade, Ms. Rooney is only $61 away from a color printer for her students: Adding Color to Our Classwork with a Color Printer.  Any amount is greatly appreciated — or you can complete either project and be a hero!  🙂

A full list of Lincoln-Eliot DonorsChoose projects can be found here — including Ms. Kelley’s Reflex Math project (only $114 to go!), cantilever rocker chairs for Ms. Goode’s classroom, and an alphabet rug for Ms. Kazakoff-Eigen’s ELL students!  We really appreciate your support for our wonderful teachers!
