Principal / PTO Update 11.21

Hi LE Families,

As the temperatures get colder, I just wanted to remind families about the Blue Zone. Please share this information with family members or others who may drive your child. We need everyone’s cooperation to make arrival and pick-up work.  The blue painted curbs, known as the Blue Zone, has its limitations, yet we ask you to help make it work.  Some key highlights:

Parking is prohibited in the Blue Zone (Active Drop Off) at the following times:

8:00 a.m. – 8:35 a.m. Monday through Friday
11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Monday through Friday
2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

How the Blue Zone works during morning arrival:

•        No car may enter the school driveway.  This is for authorized vehicles only.
•        The first car to arrive at the Blue Zone must pull up as far as possible (to the driveway entrance/exit)
•        Each car must pull up directly behind the car in front of them. At 8:10, a staff member will open the car doors to allow students to exit safely.
•        Students must be able to exit the car independently; the driver must stay in the car. If children need assistance to get out of the car, the driver must park in a legal spot outside of the Blue Zone.
•        School staff will tell your child when it is safe for them to get out. Students should have their backpacks, lunches, etc. within reach and ready to go.
•        Children MUST use the door on the sidewalk side of the car.  They should NEVER exit the car on the traffic side.
•         The children will walk from the car along the sidewalk to enter the Jackson Street or Pearl Street entrance doors.
•        Once the child has properly exited the car, carefully pull out of the Blue Zone. Please use caution and remember that there are other cars traveling on Jackson Street.
•        The Blue Zone is used in rain, snow, or sunshine.

The Blue Zone can be a very effective system as long as we work together. Please watch the video below for more information on our drop off procedure.

Dear families,

We are getting closer to finally having our own Lincoln-Eliot mascot!  On Election Day, our students and staff voted on our six choices and narrowed it down to a top three:

Llamas!

Lynxes!

or Leopards!

Next we will be getting some amazing drawings of these options from our wonderful art teacher, Ms. Sutherland, and then we will have our final vote on Tuesday, November 23.  Kids, start thinking about your favorite, and get ready to vote!

We hope to see everyone at our PTO meeting (over Zoom) this Tuesday, and in person (in the overhang) at our Books & Bites at Night book fair / evening event on November 23.

Upcoming Dates To Note:

Principal / PTO Update 10.17

Dear LE Families,

I am happy to report that there were no COVID cases at Lincoln-Eliot this week!

As part of our NPS System-Wide Goals for the 2021-2022 School Year, we have committed to identifying and addressing students’ strengths and needs in literacy development.  In addition to our ongoing district measure, the Benchmark Assessment System, we have adopted universal literacy screeners at all grade levels, K-5, Fall, Winter, and Spring.

Because the best time to identify and address reading difficulties is as early as possible, in Kindergarten, students will complete the EarlyBird Screener, a comprehensive, game-based assessment tool that assesses our youngest students on the key literacy milestones most predictive of later reading success.

In grades 1-5, students will complete the i-Ready Diagnostic, an adaptive assessment that provides teachers with both screening information and actionable insight into specific literacy growth and needs.  Both the EarlyBird and the i-Ready meet MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Guidelines for Dyslexia Screening.

Both of these assessments will enable educators to support students using a proactive, preventative model.  Classroom teachers will be using this information and meeting with school-based teams to plan targeted instruction that will support the growth of all students.

Thank you,
Principal Morrissey

Hi LE families,

Please see below for updates about COVID communication and COVID dashboard as laid out by Superintendent David Fleishman.

Change to COVID Communication Protocols
As was the case last year, it is my commitment to be consistent and transparent with notifications of COVID cases in our school building. As we continue to respond to COVID scenarios, we have adjusted our communication protocols to be meaningful and informative. Moving forward, please note the changes outlined below:

    • Close contacts will continue to be notified by a public health professional and provided appropriate instructions.
    • Students in a class with a positive case will be notified immediately following the identification of close contacts.
    • Principals will notify families of the number of cases in the school per week through either the weekly eblast/newsletter or a weekly email. This notification will take the place of the “all school” notification that was previously sent on the same day as the class notification.

Please reach out with any questions or concerns.

Weekly COVID Case Number Blurb
This week, Lincoln Eliot school recorded 0 COVID cases. Information on districtwide COVID cases and vaccination rates can be found on the Newton Health and Human Services website here: NPS COVID Case Count and Vaccination Rates.

Principal / PTO Update 9.27.21

Hi Families,

Due to a state-wide supply shortage of tests, COVID pool testing was delayed this past week for several NPS schools, including Lincoln-Eliot. We are scheduled to begin pool testing this week provided our supplies arrive on time. We thank parents for their patience.

On September 20, 2021, the School Committee voted to approve the revised design enrollment and space program for the Lincoln-Eliot School building project (8 in favor with one abstention).  The project will be a 20 classroom school with two dedicated special education classrooms and will have ample breakout, support and resources spaces, and cafetorium, gym, library, art and music spaces that can support enrollment growth and fluctuations.  The project will be comparable in size and design to the Angier, Cabot, and Zervas Elementary School projects but on a larger site with playground and generous green space.  The design team will now move forward to develop multiple renovation/addition and new conceptual design options to meet the space program.

Principal / PTO Update 9.12.21

Hi Lincoln-Eliot Families,

It was so incredible to see so many faces back in our building on Thursday for our first day of school. The energy and excitement from all the students returning filled the air. Thank you to parents who helped make pick-up and drop-off run smoothly by being prepared with using the correct entrances. It was wonderful to have all of our LE community back together again and I know everyone will settle into these new routines quickly!

Hispanic History Month is 9/15 – 10/15.  In honor of and to bring awareness to the Hispanic culture Ms. Brinson, Ms. Sutherland, and Ms. Selwyn have teamed up. The bulletin board outside of the main office will showcase a colorful and cultural Mexican mural of Frida Kahlo and Day of the Dead.  Ms. Sutherland will display student work representing Day of the Dead. Ms. Selwyn will read a book about the life of Frida Kahlo to all students across grades.

Frida Kahlo was a painter and a teacher who was resilient and determined.  She never gave up although faced with many adversities.

Day of the Dead is a tradition to honor loved ones that have died.  It has Mexican, Spanish, and Latin American roots.  Culturally the two-day celebration is commemorated with food, festivities, and religious practices.

Throughout the year, the bulletin board will be used to bring awareness to marginalized populations.  It is our hope that teachers will incorporate these themes into their classrooms.

Thanks,
Principal Morrisey & the PTO
